CHR or CCR1036 12G 4S

Tue Apr 11, 2017 8:03 pm

Please help me decide!!!! I want to replace pfsense as our core router/firewall with mikrotik. I am confused whether to go with CCR1036 12G 4S or CHR p1 license and a server. Our main requirements are:
1. 50-60 pcs spread over 5 subnets.
2. Campus wifi usermanager for 500 user base but 60-100 max active users (in future).
If CHR the recommend some servers as well.

May I ask why you'd want to replace pfsense? it's a firewall not a router and as such it's a really really good one.

For your routing needs it's actually a lot about the services and traffic you'll move, information that you're not providing.

Anyway, CCR1036 is after 1072 the biggest routers MikroTik offer, CHR depends entirely on the hardware you'll set it on and it also requires a hypervisor. Usually any server x86 CPU will be a lot faster than any CCR, but again, your needs dictate what you should get.

CCR 1036 should work just fine for that amount of users.
There you go then you touched something ;-) : it only takes a change in wind direction to screw with your nat :-)

I suggest that you don't give up on your PFSense when you upgrade or install a new core router.

Leave the routing to Mikrotik (I suggest you choose CCR, for the projected number of users, you can even go for the CCR1009) and "firewalling" to PFSense. It would also be better if you can throw in a web proxy server into the mix, as well.

Then I suggest you focus more on the network distribution configuration design in managing your campus-wide hotspot.
