You can connect virtual ethernet adapters to custom LAN segment, i.e. isolated virtual network. Or do you mean something else?

Yes you can do it with a Virtual Ethernet adapter. But make sure that you have enabled Intel Virtualization Technology on your PC before you install the OS so that the virtual drivers may properly detect the Ethernet adapter.

I think VMware ESXi Ethernet interfaces connect to and use an internal VMware switch.
However - I do think it is possible to make the external physical Ethernet directly available to a single host and by-pass the vswitch.
