40Gb interfaces with CHR

Fri Jun 16, 2017 2:55 pm

Has anyone been able to use 40Gb interfaces with CHR and if so which ones and what hypervisor?

vmxnet3 can apparently sustain near 40gbps speeds. Given CHR already supports vmxnet3 and have an unlimited license option, the question becomes one for the hypervisor.

Given adequate hardware, I am fairly sure ESX6.5 with adequate gear, would be able to sustain 40Gbps+

I know that in VMware ESXi , the vmxnet3 interface is not limited to 10-gig. It is purely a paravirtual optimized network driver/interface.

For me, testing testing two different CHR systems on the same VMware ESXi box, I can get throughputs in excess of 17 gig (faster than 10 gig).

The 10-gig restriction is the physical Ethernet interface.
I suppose that at the physical VMware ESXi network card you could play with bonding and LACP (and test/try all of the load/sharing protocols).
Or - Just find a 20 or 40 Gig network card that VMware ESXi supports.

You might want to google VMware ESXi 40 gig

In your VMware ESXi server at the CLI prompt, you can type in "esxcli network nic list" to see what current networks are installed in your VMware ESXi server. ((( This shows what is currently installed - not what is supported )))

So, have you done any tests so far? What is the maximum throughput you get with CHR? What hardware do you use? Which settings within ESXi?

Earlier this year ( 2018 ) , I've been able to test at a sustained 24 gig rate on a CHR using VMware ESXi paravirtual vmxnet3 network interfaces.

I suspect that if Mikrotik had bare-metal 64-bit CHR ISO available, then there would no longer be the overhead load and limitations of the HyperVisor.
I am pretty sure a bare-metal CHR running bare-metal with 10-Gig (and faster) ethernet network drivers and a newer-high-throughput milti-core dual-Xeon processors with fast memory probably would by far out-perform any and all other CHRs and 32-bit-bare-metal systems.
