Hyper-V core 2016 some issues

Sun Jan 14, 2018 11:35 am

Hello Folks!

We face some "issues" with CHR router os 6.41 running as guest on Hyper-V core 2016 with all latest patches on.
Our hardware is HPDL380p G8. And the guest got 4 CPU:s and 256MB RAM, we tried also with 4GB more or less CPU:s.
We used the vhdx image to boot on. In KVM/XEN we used raw disk image.

And yes, we use SSD disks on the host, 6 disks in RAID10, so disks are not slow. Other guests are lightening fast.

Using legacy adapters did not work either, we had to use normal adapters. In the host it is a teamed "SET" switch which consists of two nio:s connected to two different switches. Legacy adapters are detected by RouterOS and link speed becomes 100Mbit/s full duplex. Using the normal adapters in hyper-v makes the ethernet port inside routers work, but it is not detected properly speed and such becomes unknown.

First, it could not boot if you selected type generation 2, and we wonder how that comes. All our linux os:es like cantos and so on are happy and lightening fast with it.
Secondly, the boot of CHR is very slow, in KVM and XEN it boots in 2-3 seconds and is lightning fast, with hyper-v it takes over a minute.

When CHR is up and running we have jus noticed it also shows slownesses connecting with winbox. Once logged in you do not notice any direct slownesses.
Overall CHR on Hyper-V feels a bit sluggish, it does not pass traffic at the same speed as the KVM or XEN chr guests does. It is simply slower.

Whilst reading Microsoft technet and forums they say stay away from guests of generation 1, because they slow things down.

Anyone who have experience of Hyper-V and CHR ?
