Fri Feb 22, 2019 11:04 pm

Hello
How can I install the CHR on the Cloudcone VPS?
I already tried the DigitalOcean tutorial (dd if = chr.img bs = 1024 of = / dev / vda).
After the Boot, the Grub can not find the boot disk

I'm not familiar with the tutorial on digital ocean or cloudcone as VPS provider, but I've successful installed some CHR instances on different providers.
If you find a vps provider which is providing Mikrotik CHR as an OS option to install, it is the easiest way.
If you prefer some other provider, some linux knowledge is helpful and it should be no problem to install a CHR on any vps provider which is using kvm virtualisation.

What a lot of tutorials I've seen aren't mentioning and can giving trouble:
- Find out what your VPS system is using for the virtual disks, like '/dev/sda' or is it '/dev/vda' for the disks.

- Use a actual CHR version image to download via wget, don't just copy the commands of the tutorials with older download links, some older versions of CHR did not have drivers for virtio disks and won't be able to boot inside a VPS from a provider which is using virtio disks.

- Prefer to boot the VPS into a linux rescue system, and writing the CHR image to disk, instead of writing the CHR image from a running linux system booted from the same disk you are writing the CHR image to. This makes sure the preinstalled Linux system is not writing anything to the disk, and might damage the freshly written CHR filesystem on the disk, while/before rebooting.

- on vps with are low on ram (like 128-256mb), even if this is plenty for a little CHR, it is sometimes not that easy to put an CHR image those VPS, but it is possible
