CHR on Proxmox optimization.

Wed Feb 03, 2021 7:48 pm

Hello! I own an rb3011, recently I got my ASN and started some serious homelab experiments. So I had seen high cpu usage on the routerboard. I am trying out CHR on proxmox. The hypervisor config is AMD Athlon 200G and 8GB of ram, a 1TB harddisk. Proxmox version is 6.3-3. CHR version is latest v6.46.8. I have bridged the NICs. NICs are tplink TG-3468 realtek chipset. I have selected VirtIo Para virtualized nic for the VM allocated it 2gb of ram and 4 cores. Is there some optimization that I can do? I will have 3x full ipv6 peer over tunnels, 2x full ipv4 bgp over tunnels. Lastly some pcc and ipsec tunnels. Traffic max 200mbps. The cpu is not the hifi one but it has very low power consumption. If trial goes well will buy CHR p1 license.

There are Mellanox Intel nics that offers hardware of loading.
mellanox is most of the time the best choice if it's supported by proxmox.

Intel like Cisco is almost all of the time have limit ions like only Intel brand sfp sfp+ support.

Check if the offloading features supported by proxmox.
