SwitchOS or RouterOS for a Ring fiber redondancy

Sun Apr 15, 2018 12:40 pm

Hello,

I am new to the forum, and I would like to call the network specialist.
I have a network ring fiber LC (Multimode) to achieve, with 5 (SwitchOS or RouterOS). (closed network not on internet)
On each device, just some RJ45 device.

I have the choice between two models:
CSS326-24G-2S + RM (SwitchOS - 139 €)
CRS326-24G-2S + RM (RouterOS - 199 €)

Because of the price, I think I use the Switch OS because the network is not complicated.
I do redundancy in case of breakage of a fiber or a switch with RSTP,

Is this method correct with SwitchOS?
Do I have to use another type of redundancy? and spent on RouterOS?
Is it possible to do better with RouterOS?

Thanks for your feedback,

CSS is Layer 2 switch with vlan, bonding, rstp, stp, ... support.
CRS is Layer 3 switch with all above features + routing, dhcp, vpn, ...

I have used both, my recommendation will be CSR, but if you have limit budget then CSS is good too.

Thanks for your return,

Yes it is a simple network in L2.

is there a better solution than RSTP, and easy to implement?
I read some post, I'm lost between, OSPF, MPLS, VPLS.

if you have experience using these protocols.

if the redundancy is better in the event of a break, I can take RouterOS

thx

I just confused, ospf, mpls, ... are routing protocols.

Can you please explain bit more about your network, all the above are available on CRS ( just to let you know, you CRS326 is dual boot, RouterOS or SWOS)

The network is in L2.
5 (RouterOS or SwitchOS) connected together with a multimode LC fiber loop.
on each device some devices connected.

I just wrote on the forum "Ring topology" and I'm lost now.

I am looking for a good solution of redundancy, in case of fiber cut.
My first choice is the RSTP, but there may be a better solution.

Ok, are they in the one single location ot 5 different locations?

If one then CSS is ok, CRS with SWOS is better option.

If you have 5 different locations then You need one CCR and one CSS or CRS, CRS in it own Is not enough for Routing and switching when you have 1GB or 10GB.

Thx for your feedback,
it is in a building,
length of the fiber is about 150,200m.
it's purely technical. on my diagram I drew some PCs. but it is equipment with a fixed ip.
No internet.
Ring with 1GB SFP+

Then CSS does the job, if you have budget go for CRS better cpu.
Also SFP+ can aggregate up to 10GB

ok, thanks for your feedback.
I will take CRS. if the network has to evolve.
