2.5 GBit Ethernet possible with MikroTik CRS309-1G-8S+IN with MikroTik S+RJ10 SwOS 2.11

Thu Jun 11, 2020 3:17 pm

Hi,

since 2.5 and 5 GBit ethernet makes sense regarding to hardware costs, I wonder if I can use
a MikroTik CRS309-1G-8S+IN with an MikroTik S+RJ10 SFP+ Module in 2.5 GBit Mode.

I don't have the hardware here, but in the switch, when I disable autoneg i can only chose between 100, 1000 and 10000 MBit but nothing in between....

Thanks a lot

Cheers

I don't run SwOS on mine, but the CRS309 & S+RJ10 are capable of 2.5 & 5G when running RouterOS, and will autonegotiate to those speeds. By the way, given the cost of the S+RJ10, if you can use fiber, that's probably going to come out cheaper (generic 10GBASE-SR SFP+ & OM3 multimode fiber).

Hi,

thanks for your answer. Yes sure, if you have to buy the parts it may be cheaper, but I af some S+RJ10 still lying around and some newer Clients do have a 2.5 Mbit ElCheapo 2.5 GBit NIC build in, so I thought, why not :-)

Cheers

Yeah, in that case, why not.

I've used a generic SFP+ 10G copper module & it negotiated 2.5Gbit/s with a nic like I'd expect. The speed showed up incorrectly as 10Gb in the webui, but other than that it worked ok. With that being said, used MMF SFP+ and 10Gb nics are way cheaper. The only advantage I see for copper is if you have pre-run cabling already. Be aware you can only use one copper sfp+ module every other port so it divides your port capacity in half (this is due to the ton of power it uses)
