ospf failure to receive valid multicast 224.0.0.5 Hello

Thu Jul 22, 2021 6:55 am

I have two routers connected by a ubi wireless link. Until recently they worked fine with OSPF beween them with a bit of flapping recently , but now they won't
work at all.

R1 ----- AP ------ STA ----- R2

Both routers are connected on ether 1

Both R1 and R2 are running ospf and work fine with other routers on different interfaces on the same routers like ether2 etc.

Network statements are correct for the ether1 interface of each router, same subnet on each.

Both packet sniffing and OSPF debug logs show conclusively that

R1 sends a HELLO packet from its IP, and R2 recieves that HELLO.

R2 sends a HELLO packet from its IP, but R1 'does not receive it' at all,' jjust .gone.

Thus the two routers hang in a INIT state, never getting any further.

There are no logs on R1 concerning the missing HELLO from R2.

R2 packet sniff and ospf logs says packet was sent.

R1 shows nothing.

Change to NBMA, if OSPF start to work then, then your wireless link is dropping multicast.

@homerwsmith
probably you are running with default network type.
In your case don't need it.

@mrz
in this case does multicast-helper=full will help, even if he is running with unrecommended network-type?
If both SSIDs are good quality signal, most modern devices choose 5GHz for the speed.

I am running with network type = broadcast which is default set up.

Rembember R1 is connected to a number of other routers on other ethernet ports, and works perfectly with mulicast.

How could I have made the ubi radios not pass multicast?

I really appreciate your help.

Any why does the wireless link pass multicast in one direction and not the other?
