Hi,
I just would like to ask following. We have two ISPs (as we are in the mountains area and there are outages from time to time. We decided to switch to ISP2 as a default, and ISP1 letting as a backup. Here's how we are connected:
ISP1 via Ethernet to Motorola Cannopy. Some 4 - 6 km to their gw. Pings are rather stable, some 4 -6 ms, but that line had some 6 - 7 outages in a month, and it was engough for us to switch ISP2 as a default.
But the strange thing is - ISP2's access point is some 0.5km, connected via 5GHz. We use PC router, Atheros 5213 card. ISP2 uses RB532 with Atheros too. While no significant traffic was there in the time of my test (under 1mbit), the pings were hopping from 6ms to some 20ms.
What can be reason to cause such ping hopping? Could it be that ISP2's routerboard is overloaded, if they e.g. use it for few local clients on 2.4, and do shaping on it? Does it affect latency?
Thanks,
Petr
