[SOLVED] CRS125 + EdgeSwitch working together problem

Wed Feb 03, 2016 12:42 pm

Hi everyone,
I have Mikrotik CRS125 working as the main router and EdgeSwitch working as switch behind mikrotik.

The first time I plugged the upsteam cable into 0/1 port of the EdgeSwitch I have managed to kill the network in the whole building. The problem was the STP protocol, so I turned it off on the EdgeSwitch.
Now the the switch is working and I even managed to add some vlans, but there are some things that keeps me wondering...

1. Why I cannot ping Mikrotik from the EndgeSwitch? The Ping utility says "Destination Unreachable", although Mikrotik passes DHCP and VLANs to the endpoint devices on the EndgeSwitch ports...
2. The DNS client keeps telling me that "Failed to send query packet. Can't reach DNS server at 255.255.255.255."

Did someone managed to make EndgeSwitch and Mikrotik friends ? :D

Update: forgot to add the dafault gateway on the EdgeSwitch "System > Connectivity > IPv4" page.
Every field should be filled.
Problem resolved

UPD: made some more pinging. Devices which are behind endgeswitch can ping mikrotik, but directly from EdgeSwitch it is unreachable...strange

1. mikrotik <<-- endgeswitch <<-- PC or other device can ping mikrotik
2. mikrotik <<-- endgeswitch can't ping mikrotik

STP is something you usually want on to prevent bridging loops. So keep an eye out for broadcast storms taking your network down.

What VLAN is the management IP of the EdgeSwitch on? Did you leave the Mikrotik's management IP on VLAN1? What IP/network/VLAN is the computer that can ping the Mikrotik on?

Simpy saying that your edgeswitch cannot ping your mikrotik is simply not enough information. You need to breakdown how your network is setup: connections, IPs, VLANs, Firewall rules, etc...

Hi, Revelation
Thank you for your reply. EdgeSwitch was on the default management IP - 192.168.1.2

The Mikrotik default network is 192.168.88.0/24. I have changed the management IP to 192.168.88.2 and now the ping to Mikrotik (192.168.88.1) is working, however when I try to ping something outside the LAN ( 8.8.8.8 ) EdgeSwitch says the network is unreachable.
Mikrotik's management IP is on VLAN1.
There are no blocking rules in the firewall.

The PC behind EdgeSwitch that can ping Mikrotik is on the same network (vlan1) 192.168.88.0/24
