Port flapping (ether6 link down/up) on RB3011UiAS-RM

Hi,

I recently convinced a friend to purchase an RB3011UiAS-RM for his office since he needed something reliable and powerful enough. The router has been installed and in use for about a week now and everything's been solid, but recently the switch which is connected to ether6 on the router has started to drop for a few seconds at a time.

The log is filled with entries like "ether6 link down" followed by "ether6 link up (speed 1G, full duplex)". I've attached a fresh supout.rif file.

The router is running the stock firmware since there were no newer packages available for download on mikrotik.com at the time of the setup.

Any help here would be appreciated, even just an acknowledgement of the issue.

You've checked the obvious like the patch cord from ETHER6 to your switch? You've tried another port on your switch/RB?

I took a look at your configuration and one thing I did notice is your switch configuration.

I'm assuming you want all the ports (except ETHER1 and the SFP) in a switch configuration?

If so, you need to make ETHER2 the master-port for ETHER3,4,5. Then make ETHER6 the master-port for ETHER7,8,9,10.
/interface ethernet set ether3 master-port=ether2
/interface ethernet set ether4 master-port=ether2
/interface ethernet set ether5 master-port=ether2
/interface ethernet set ether7 master-port=ether6
/interface ethernet set ether8 master-port=ether6
/interface ethernet set ether9 master-port=ether6
/interface ethernet set ether10 master-port=ether6
In your bridge configuration, for br2-lan, remove all the ports and only add ETHER2 and ETHER6. That will bridge the two switch groups.

/interface bridge port add interface=ether2 bridge=br2-lan
/interface bridge port add interface=ether6 bridge=br2-lan

Thanks for your reply!

The router only has two ports connected, ether1 goes to WAN and ether6 goes to a switch. Both are on different switch groups so I didn't bother setting up any master/slave relationship between ports.

I haven't tried another port yet, I guess I could ask the tenants to move the cable.

I just remembered that when I got an RB2011 a year ago or so the ether6 port was completely dead so I'm wondering if that's just a coincidence or if this port is about to fail soon as well.

I've seen things like this on three x86 boxes. I only have three x86 MikroTiks. I have not seen it on any of my RouterBoard devices. I have more than 100 multi-ethernet RouterBoards.

It seems to happen to my units most often after what I assume was a power brownout. I have always seen it after a storm rolled through the area. One or more of the NICs will show link, no link, link, no link .... until I reboot. I've been seeing that 6.x from 6.5 through 6.27, so far.

The other night I saw it when I tried to move a function from a 100Mbps port, ether7, to a Gigabit port, ether3, with both ports in a bridge. Ether3 had been operating a 1Gbps to a Mimosa radio for several weeks until 5 minutes before I tried to use it in place of ether7. A reboot lined it out. I suspect it's something to do with the ethernet driver and Intel brand NICs in these network appliances. I haven't dug into very much. I don't know if my appliances have any parts in common with the RB3011. This could all be a red herring.

Interesting, I'll let you know how it goes once I get the guy on site to actually move the cables arond a little bit.

Seems I'm not alone, someone else seems to have the exact same issue: http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php ... 34#p522134

I can confirm that this only affects the second switch (ports 6-10). Is there any way to fix this? I've looked through the release notes for the newer RouterOS versions that have been released but haven't seen this issue mentioned anywhere. There is also no newer Routerboot version available

Sometimes MikroTik notices issues posted on the forums. Usually not. It would be best to email support@mikrotik.com about this issue and be sure to include a supout file collected while the port is flapping.

Just bumping this as we are seeing this on a couple of RB2011UAS

Port 6 wan (1gbit) drops and reconnects @ 100mbit when new devices connect via DHCP in the morning. Blocking the first device's mac doesn't seem to fix it, indicating there is something else going on here...

Hi guys,
on our last days same experience "port flapping on ports 6-10" (from ROS 6.36.rc20 renamed switch 2, finally) you can see topic here http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=108603

We solved only through a new official OS by Netinstall http://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:Netinstall and after updating (as e-mail received from support) to last RC version. Only now there are residual re-login of customers group, but it appear without a specific cluster. But since we use UBNT Rocket at moment (https://www.ubnt.com/airmax/rocketm/) we need to investigate if that is caused by them or what other.

Thanks

Sorry, guys. I think...it was solved, because after last setup of previous post, RB3011 was about 8h without problems.
But...now about 1 down every 4 hours, but there is. With identical configuration on RB1100 on the same place, no problems.
Attached screens.

Can anyone confirm this is fixed? Getting really sick of these port issues.

After many days, RB1100 continue to logout and re-login immediately groups of users, some from a specific Ubiquiqi Rocket M (as described here http://tinyurl.com/zt7bja5). More strange is that we have different values A) CPE (XM and/or XW, with 5.6.2 or 5.6.5 FW) Uptime B) Connection time to AP (value under AP information) and C) Uptime (on RB under PPP/Uptime, on UBNT CPE under PPPoE information) as a summary of problems...

Please try to install the latest RouterOS bugfix version, there are several improvements for RB3011, including port flapping fix.

Similar symptoms on HAP ac running 6.37.3. Resolved by lowering link to 100M full duplex.

Posted too soon. Flapping is back. Attempted the below with no resultant joy:
.ether5 PoE (unpowered) flapping port cable changed to ether4 rj45
.10Mbps full and half duplex
.new cat5 unshielded cables (~1m in length)

I have the same problems on a RB3011UiAS-RM (running ROS 6.38 and Firmware 3.35). With a configuration that used to work fine on a RB2011UiAS-2HnD-IN.
I tried to make the configuration from scratch yesterday, but that does not help.

For me the ports that flap are always on switch 1, i haven't seen the issue on switch 2 yet.

I had this problem on CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+PC with 6.38.1.
Flapping stopped when I disabled the loop protect feature.

Same issue here. My model is a 2011UiAS-2HnD, firmware 3.33 and v6.38.1.
Only see the flapping in the second switch (eth 6-10).
I have tried many things without success. I have just disabled loop protection, let's see how it goes...
Thanks!

Sorry, didn't work setting the loop protection to "off", same link down / link up situation.
The frequency is not constant, sometimes it happens every minute, every 2 minutes, 5 minutes...
UPDATE: it happens in both switches, 1 and 2. What I have in that port is a Sony Bravia TV with Android TV.

i have the same problem with a RB3011UiAS-RM. Ether1 and Ether4 flapping. Ether1 is WAN and Ether4 is switch (cisco WS-C3750G-24TS). No other ports are connected to RB3011UiAS-RM. Flapping occurs when there is no wan traffic (eg. over night). If i do remove the Ether1 flapping occurs, if i remove ether4 (cisco switch WS-C3750G-24TS) flapping do not occur. EtherStats from Mikrotik Router OS and EtherStats from Cisco do not show any errors or collisions. Cisco C3750G-24TS works with no problems, no other device connected to the switch do have any problems.

i tried to reboot RB3011UiAS-RM as last device on the network, but flapping still occurs.
i tried to turn off loop protection, but flapping still occurs.
i tried to change the uplink cables to ether1 and ether2, but flapping still occurs.
i changed port on Cisco switch from port1 to port2 connected to RB3011UiAS-RM and i changed port on RB3011UiAS-RM from ether4 to ether5 connected to cisco switch, both with no success.
The port flapping frequency is not constant. same like "ipereandres" in thread post #23

Basically there is no issue with that. As soon as there is traffic flapping stops. But logs are horrible to read and it feels like something is wrong.

Is there any way to get a detailed report why RB3011UiAS-RM puts the ports down and up again. The log only states "07:52:14 interface, info ether1 link down". What are the circumstances to take this ether ports down?

Firmware and ROS is the newest.

Using latest current release 6.38.5 and port flaping still happens in rb450g, and x86 using intel pro 1000 4 port gigabit cards.

Indeed, its more common with the last update.

Whats going on? The reports of this problem started from year 2011 as I read the forums, and begining with the 6.38.x routeros version it increased a lot.

Some fixes around? Any help to make routers stop flapping each 1, 2, 5, 10, 30 minutes or a workaround will be appreciated.

The same here, a long time has passed and we already have v6.43.4 and nothing has changed. I think it might be related to the device connected to the port that flaps. In my case it is an smart TV, so I suspect that when it is in standby mode, it connects and disconnects from time to time.

Good morning,
On 20th of July 2019,
I have, again the same problem with a LAN interface - 1 Gb Intel 1000 , port flapping,
The configuration is very simple, 1x LAN, 1x WAN, 1x BKP - not connected to no where, ports
DHCP, Hot Spot , traffic shaping on the LAN port
No Bridges or other virtual ports, pure hardware and directly connected

The original configuration with more of 180 days up time was:
LAN- IntelPro 1000, PCIe x1 working on 1Gb/s
WAN- Intel 100 PCI - 100Mb/s
BKP - Intel 100 PCI - not connected,

I replaced the WAN card, the 100Mb Intel PCI with almost same card, Intel1000 PCI, which was still working on 100 Mbs because it was connected to 100Mbs interface
So after 5-6 hours the LAN interface start to FLAPPING, make attention, not the NEW replaced WAN interface card but the old connected to a completely different PCI bus, and that was there for the last 2 1/2 years, with more of 180 days up time

Basically I cant understand the logic of what is happening

There is some serious issue with all ROS x86 software

The problem appears only when the number of hot spot users become more of 30,

The traffic bandwidth is between 20-50 Mb/s with top max of 70Mb/s

I need some answers

At the moment I set the LAN interface to 100Mb/s manually which temporary fix the problem

What routeros version are you using?

I got five 4 port gigabit intel nics, model 82571EB Gigabit Ethernet Controller.

When I used 2 ports of one NIC as wan ports (2 wan lines 400mbps each) I got a lot of packet loss and erratic behavior.

So I put a Broadcom 4 port gigabit interface ( 82571EB Gigabit Ethernet Controller rev. 32 ) and it fixed all my problems.

Since v6 i got port flapping in intel cards, but in random ways.

Maybe you will need to change ethernet card for make it work ok with routeros... This problem has ages.

Copy here your interface settings using console command:

/interface print detail

And your interface queues too using:

/queue interface print detail

For further inspection.

Regards.

Just created an account to say thanks to you.

This seems to have solved my problem. I recently upgraded router board to RB4011iGS+ and was getting non-stop link down on WAN (just for a moment but enough to cause disruption in Teams calls). Guess what - I was using power supply of my old RB750Gr3. The old power supply seemed to work ok but it had different Output rating than the new supply

Old: Output DC 24 V = 0.8A
New: Output DC 24 V = 1500mA = 1.5A (almost double power)

It's only been 30 mins. so fingers crossed. I'll update you soon

Well, 24V / 0.8 A would still be sufficient (with a narrow margin) for the 4011 variant without the wireless part which you seem to have (as the wireless-equipped one comes with a 2.5 A power adaptor), but the age of the power supply may be the issue. The electrolytic capacitors inside these units gradually lose their capacity, and since a certain point the power supply cannot deliver its nominal current any more.

Some home routers from other vendors in my vicinity have themselves been allright ever since 2005, but they needed several replacements of the power adaptor during that time (and several software upgrades of course, but that's another topic).

Well I didn't have any issues throughout the day, but during night and early morning there were several disconnects (19 in total) when there was no activity. Seems like it is going into powersave move but there isn't anywhere I can turn this setting off. RB4011iGS+ model I have doesn't has WiFi

Hi all,

I also had the issue of port flapping on my RB3011 with begin of 2021. Up to this point the RB3011 was operating almost 2 years with it's current configuration.
Mostly the interface up/ down flapping occured on the second block (Eth6 - Eth10) around every 1 to 5 minutes.
But also on first block (Eth1 - Eth5) the interfaces went up/ down several times in a hour, so I got many reconnects and IP changes from my ISP.
Different test on cables, devices and single step by step connections to analyse the (maybe) faulty device leads to a dead end.

To make it short:
My interface flapping issue was caused by the OS V6.48 firmware, which was - I guess - auto installed by my update script running every month. The downgrade to V6.47.8 (stable) or the (long term) V6.46.8 immediately stopped the behaviour of port flapping and work as before.

Same here version 6.48 massive port flapping with my rb3011.
Had not experienced it before.

Hi Bachgeist

RB3011UiAS - I'm seeing port-flapping on ether6 and ether7.

Never seen this before either.

Looks like this started very recently, and with this router that has had no hardware or software changes other than packages/firmware updates as they have become available.

Packages/RouterOS 6.48
Firmware 6.47.8

Which versions of (a) RouterOS and (b) Firmware did you have with the issue?

Which versions of did you end up on when stable? RouterOS 6.47.8? Firmware?

Many thanks

Pohutukawa

Quick update:

- updated Firmware to 6.48 to match RouterOS 6.48; no change to issue
- moved network cable from ETH6 to ETH5 (so on first switch chip) and only ETH7 flappiong
- moved network cable from ETH7 to ETH4 (all network cables on switch one) .... NO PORT FLAPPING

Anyone know what's happening here or seeing the same/similar?

Thanks!

3011 and port flapping is a known issue on 6.48 and MT said next release will fix this.

RB3011UiAS
6.47.7 (stable)
CPU ARMv7
CPU load 15 - 30 %
Free HDD space 88.4 MiB

the same error:
ether6 link down
ether7 link down
ether8 link down
ether9 link down
ether10 link down
(switch2)

ports on switch1 works fine, without flapping. I have 70+ hosts on switch2 (6-10 ports). loop protection enabled. I guess some host cause the problem but don't know how to find out which one. there's no loop errors in logs. Should I leave the only port on switch2 and that's how find problem host? Can I set up some special log config which will show me error host?

looks like port flapping was causing by lagging Ethernet card on one PC. after replacing 2 days network works fine

update: no, it doesn't resolve (

update2: it was defective power supply in PC

hi guys same problem I have 2x RB951G-2HnD(64bit) and 1xCRS108-8G-1S-2HnD(64bit) ether1, ether2 on CRS108 are flapping randomly all RB's are running the 6.48.2(Stable) checked the cables all of them are fine , I'm running a small home network with multiple wan

btw I tried all the solutions that are mentioned above nothing worked 😔

I've got a RB4011iGS+ I just put into service, RouterOS 6.49beta54 (software id = XXXX-YYYY) and I'm seeing port flapping; it appears to follow the device and not be specific to the port.

The log shows link down/up and negotiation between 100 and 1000 mbps over and over - 900+ such entries in just a few days of use. I've just moved the device to another port and 17 port up/down entries soon appeared in the log for that port. Replaced patch cables; I'll re-punch the wiring and/or try moving the device (an Apple TV box) to another cable run but am not optimistic it's that simple.

The Apple TV device at the other end will report internet disconnections, more typically after a period of being idle, but not exclusively. I can force the report at the TV by changing the Ethernet rate advertisement selections for the port by removing 1000mbps half/full and then later re-adding them.

I'm rather new to Mikrotik but reasonably comfortable with networking; before landing upon this forum discussion I tried disabling 1000 half/full advertisements; that reduced greatly (only one drop overnight) but did not completely eliminate te the issue.

I've just moved the Apple TV to another port to confirm the problem follows (it appears to) and will monitor a bit and should the issue prove to remain, I'm going to disable auto-negotiation and see if that is stable. FYI.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, also seeing the same behaviour on a CRS326-24G-2S.

Thought I'd check out RouterOS 7 RC1; port flapping is observed there too, FYI.

Back to stable (6.48.4) and, unsurprisingly, port flapping on both TV devices is observed there too, more on the Apple TV box. A cheap tp-link switch hosting only the two log-filling devices is my current, unfulfilling, solution - for now. On to other things.

I have port-flapping issue on my hAP AC2 as well. It didnt have it when I purchased it 4 months ago, I guess the issue started happening 1 month ago, maybe due to the firmware version.

Its between my router (ac2 on ether1) and mikrotik SXT on the roof. I changed the cable and reset the router but that didn't fix it. Then I replaced the ac2 with my old rb951 and there's no port-flap anymore.

My port-flapping was like this:

23:00:00 ether 1 link down
23:00:02 ether 1 link up 100Mbps
23:01:00 then down again...

It was all OK with negotiated at 10Mbps, but that kills the speed of my internet.

edit: do I need to rma the device?

I also have hap ac2 and sxt and it does this same randomly link up 1gb, link down, up down few times than settles on 100mbit. Just started notice it in logs.

ISPs sxt doesn't have gigabit ports, they negotiate on 100Mbps but they automatically reduce it to 10Mbps to prevent drop-outs.
So in your end, does it work without drop-outs at 100Mbps link rate negotiated after reduced from 1G?

edit: I'm thinking about what's causing this all of a sudden; firmware issues (incompatibility between devices) or slowly degrading ethernet chip.
tomorrow I will test at factory firmware downgraded and I test on all ports available with combination of settings.

I may resort having a middle device in-between them working as a bridge to workaround this as majority did. I'm afraid returning this device may be even more expensive than to have a simple bridge.

Nothing worked and I resorted the device (rb951) in the middle working as a switch.

Well crossing fingers now... I think I solved the port-flap issue, it was a faulty poe injector. Lets see how far it goes this time.
