how to enable GPS on MC7304

Thu Mar 03, 2016 5:05 pm

Hello ,
can i make the MC7304 work as a GPS and still work as a 4G modem?

becasue I know that when I want to use the info channel i need to close the modem
the same thing for using the SMS.

so can it work as GPS and still be on-line?

Thanks ,

I can see the modem is working
when I run
at!gpsloc?
I get my locataion
but when I run this command -
system gps set port=usb2 channel=2 enabled=yes
and then
/system gps monitor
        date-and-time: nov/30/1999 00:00:00
             latitude: none
            longitude: none
             altitude: none
                speed: none
  destination-bearing: none
         true-bearing: none
     magnetic-bearing: none
                valid: no
           satellites: 0
why?

Obtaining the position by an AT command is one thing. For th GPS function to work, the router expects periodic NMEA messages on the port (e.g. GGA will do). Maybe you can set up your device using some AT command to provide such messages.

You have to register but it's free. Chapter 7 has the GPS commands.

Can you confirm that the device is actually sending NMEA message?
Disable GPS on the router and check that serial port traffic using "/system serial-terminal" in the console.
You should see incoming NMEA messages every second.
If not, your device is not working as expected, or not supported by ROS (this could be HW and SW specific.e.g. I have a ublox7 device which works on OmniTik and Windows, but doesn't on NetMetal and Linux (without using an USB switch for the latter because it uses the wrong driver, ehci vs ohci)).

The modem need the string "$GPS_START" to be sent on the NMEA port before it'll start sending messages.

For my MC7354 it's...

/sys gps set enabled=yes port=usb2 channel=1 init-string="\$GPS_START"

Thanks you very much!

I think Mikrotik should save this post
very important setting .

Thanks a lot!

to which output of the modem do I need to connect the antenna? GPS\AUX?
because it's work when I connect to AUX as well?

by the way do you know if I can us this modem and send SMS while the data is running?
beause you can only use channel 2 for data\info?
can you understand my question ?

The spec for the MC7304 doesn't explicitly say but the spec for the MC7354 says that the AUX connector is both Secondary Cellular AND Secondary GPS so I'd use the AUX if it works. This way the antenna supports both cellular and gps.

That's a good question but I don't know the answer, sorry.

These are the Sierra Wireless MC73XX series Mini-PCIe cards. The most common are the MC7304 and the MC7354.

The boards have 3 antenna connectors:
MAIN: primary cellular antenna
GPS: primary GPS antenna
AUX: secondary cellular and secondary GPS

The antenna frequency range specs are as follows.

MAIN/Cellular (varies by model)
704–960 MHz
1710–1995 MHz
2110–2170 MHz
2500–2690 MHz

AUX/Cellular (varies by model)
734–960 MHz
1805–1995 MHz
2110–2170 MHz
2620–2690 MHz

GPS and AUX/GPS (cellular antennas will probably work)
Narrow-band GPS:
1575.42 MHz ±2 MHz minimum
Wide-band GPS and GLONASS:
1565–1606 MHz recommended
