p2p throttling & Skype

Thu Oct 07, 2004 5:08 am

Hi,

I am currently limiting all P2P traffic but need to exclude skype. Any ideas on how I could do this without having to have a custom skype config for my users?

thanks,

bill

you would need to run Skype and monitor the traffic using Torch on the MT box, then mark the Skype traffic differently to the p2p traffic with Mangle. Assuming Skype traffic is not identical to other p2p.....

let us know

Thanks, From what I've read skype looks like any other p2p app, so I think I'll have to tell people to set Skype to a specific port :( But will do some sniffing and see what I can find.

Isn't skype an ip telephone software? However, I thought Mikrotik inspect each package for certain traffic and take action after that. I run a test with eMule and find out that only server connections are blocked, not transfers to other peers. Let's see if KAD is also blocked in eMule. I'll be back when I'm done with my test. :P

Skype is IP telephone software, but it uses the same p2p protocols and packet headers as other p2p apps. Or at least thats what I think, based on the fact it shows up in my p2p mangle rule...
