[SOLVED] internal IP-compname resolver

Mon Sep 18, 2006 2:06 pm

Before using Mikrotik RouterOS, we used one machine as DNS+WINS+DHCP Server (NT4) and another one as internet gateway+firewall
Using RouterOS, we can combine DHCP Server and Firewall in one box.

But..can it also function as internal (LAN) DNS/kind-a-WINS Server?
We want to disable Netbios over TCP/IP on all workstations and use Mikrotik box instead as a IP-hostname resolver for our LAN.

Any help/information?

Most modern clients will query DNS first before attempting WINS.

If all your hostnames are registered properly inside DNS, then you shouldnt need a WINS server. MT has a DNS server (afaik, it's limited).

Yes, I can see that IPs of all PCs on our LAN are listed on the IP > DNS > Cache but _without_ their corresponding hostnames.

Does it mean we will need a seperate box as DNS server for internal/LAN hosts ?

afaik, you can add static DNS entries in the /ip dns menu.

Static? Does it mean I have to type them all one by one?
Ouch!
I guess that's why we need WINS Server in the first place (to automate the process)

Any other suggestions?

Sure...

Install a proper DNS server that can support dynamic updates from your clients.

MT is a router, not a DNS server...
