Note, that User Manager isn't workin in the v3.0beta yet.
also there could be lot of bugs, please email them to support@mikrotik.com and specify in the subject that you are reffering to v3.0

Is there any preliminary documentation yet? (For example, the SNMP API that was discussed in previous threads?)

Were there any changes to the wireless drivers? Previous discussions indicated a new driver that would increase performance alot?

piwi3910, both methods of upgrade should work fine, use regular upgrade by uploading packages via FTP.

Is there an updated hardware compatibility list so I can see which SATA controllers are supported?
Please say LSI MegaRAID SATA/SAS (It's an open source Linux 2.6 driver!) is supported so we can use this on Sun AMD64 systems - I really want to deploy some x4200s with the new SMP support

I wish there were more features. such as

- Multi threadings and detection several number of cpu

- Backup Router (mirroring routeros configs on backup router and force to take the original router's place when the original router is down and stand down when it is backed online) very critical when we wan't to maintain hardware issues or replace add/removehardware or even a simple reboot.

- support for USB wireless and specially USB pendrive as installation.

- Event-based scripting rather than simple Schedule or Netwatch. for instance trigger a script when certain packet from specified IP address received, meaning trigger scripting on packets arrival or departure.

- deeper access in scripting, instead of few console command and loops. access API functions and object oriented access to package's interfaces.

- support for various wireless cards, 70% of available cards here in this part of the world doesnt match with routeros, such as ralink chips who are very common and cheap

- text web browsing to control any web-based network equipments such as reboot of the adsl or sdsl modem via web-based interface when modem hangs.

there are a lot things that we expect to see.

thanks again.

ok i can definitly say, i'm the one with the first bug...
updated my test router by FTP all the new packages to the router...
rebooted....
and nothing anymore...
no booting or so what ever...

so don't ftp the packages... it doesn't work on a clean RB500 install

RouterOS == Atheros, get used to it. It's been made pretty clear on the forums that they don't have much intrest in supporting anything else with any serious degree of effort. Atheros is an excellent product line, but there are a lot of other things out there!

Personally I'd like to see better support for Hermes (it's old yes, but it's GOOD! and I have a lot of them). Cisco AeroNET cards also have pretty poor support. I can't get them to actually associate to anything :/ However, with the age and EOL status of those particular chipsets I can understand why they don't want to spend time on them, with so many other MUCH more important things needing done *cough*BGP*cough*.

upgrade

Fri Sep 29, 2006 10:22 pm

ok i upgraded, and like i said after the reboot the RB50 did come up again.
a hard reset worked and got V3 b1 working....
BUT

everything works as far as i can see...
2 strange things...
the routing package is disabled after the upgrade...
you can just enable it again...

but worse...
the pppoe client doest work...
it just says dailing but nothing connects...

after downgrading back again to 2.9.30 evrything is fine again..

I dont see any real difference except for SATA support ... besides limited hardware support changes what has changed?

snmp enhancements?
scripting enhancements?
firewall enhancements?
what has really changed?

If you actually look at forum, you will find promise that ralink will be suported in 3.0 version...

With SMP support has the 1GB RAM limit gone the way of the dodo? The reason I ask is simple, if I have two Opterons then for the most efficient use of the the maximum 1GB RAM I must have 512MB per CPU otherwise all traffic has to go across the HT bus which increases the latency and loads up all of the traffic onto a single memory controller defeating the point of NUMA but if I use 512MB per CPU that means I need 2x256MB sticks to use which are difficult to get in Registered/ECC versions for PC-3200 or PC2-5300

huh? why? what's your application?
tcp acceleration would only benefit the endpoints in a conversation and not the points inbetween. just curious.

well, as far I know beta is reffered to none-tested and none-debugged version of a software that is released for volunteers to test it so that developer can finalize it.

but speaking of this 3.0 beta, its not even close... ralink might get covered in 3.0.5 alpha? or 3.0.25? or maybe 3.0.35?

... supporting this chip is just an small piece of nail in making a giant warehouse.

god help them.

Were there any changes to the wireless drivers? Previous discussions indicated a new driver that would increase performance alot?
Any plan to incorporate new polling scheme that
would increase MT resilience to interference ?

By using new mac protocol that disable random backoff
option ?

High Regards,
Andrei

anyone found a big different in this beta version ?

in wireless setting, the frequency combo box is gone.

do not upgrade an important system, only for testing. you can use the demo key or the trial to try the beta. for tests, the demo should be enough

Upgrade 3.0

Tue Oct 03, 2006 9:06 am

Why would they get rid of PCMCIA Radiolan support?

I understand the necessity for less space and less driver support. but sometimes the old stuff works better. Look at Microsoft as an example, everytime they change their OS they lose driver support.

I guess they want atheros 65mw cards to be used ?

I think I will stick with 2.9 it has all more support features, and its functionality fits Hotel, Airport, Cafe customer needs.

Well done MT, keep up the good work!

To all: as normis said, this is called BETA, which means it should be used for testing purposes only. Anybody who's willing to test and submit observations and bugs is most welcome as it will help in developing RouterOS.

Cheers all...

I'd like to see ability to use it as a PPPoE client concentrator.

I'd like to be able to terminate different PPPoE sessions to different VLANs so I can use a 532 with a VLAN switch to service many customers in an MTU.

*) OSPF does not work with routing package;
Any chance to have OSPF working with 3.0? It has been reported from different sources that OSPF is not well workin on 2.9 so I was wondering if support will be better in 3.0 (maybe implementation switch to some zebra-like package?)

Any comment would be helpful.

thank you
