V7 ALPHA/BETA Testers needed?

Tue Sep 13, 2016 7:13 am

Support,
At some point when you get closer to the release of alpha or beta will you need early testers? I ask because i have liked the Mikrotik RouterOS for a long time and have potential with the CHR platform or my CCR1036-8G-2S+ router on 10Gbps in my home. I keep logs and Solarwinds Orion network stats on the entire network and am willing to test or share data. I am also active in tests with a large fiber carrier in the US and have access to additional ipv4/6 networks with address space. Please PM me back if i can help provide statistics to help.
Thanks

Better to send this offer to support. I wonder what they will reply to you.

Alpha means "internal testing".
When we will have "public testing" (meaning Beta), we will announce it here.

I think MikroTik should take the current beta, change the GUI color and post it on the website as 7.0 alpha. Then all the guys demanding v7 will go away.

I am not using it. Happily. :-) But as long there will be such information like we will not see v.7 this year, I cannot change my mind at all... :-) :-)

Where did you find this info?

We don't need v7 alpha this year, we just need some serious bugs fixed in v6 and maybe a list what have been done with v7 and what will be done, and if possible an expected date, status update or whatever.
At the moment, we have an OS with some serious problems, and since 2013 we hear that "it will be fixed with v7".

+1 It's starting to sound like a broken record lately... Fixed in v7, fixed in v7, fixed in v7, but they can't even tell us when v7 will come... For all I know, it could be the year 2020

So when can we get v7? With Apples removal of PPTP from macOS and iOS, I need to replace my VPN. L2TP with IPsec would be the natural progression - except it doesn't work with multiple people using the same public ip (road warriors at the same hotel).

Programmers should totally stop the development version 6 because it's such a patchwork, so little functional as ever. Mainly concentrate on the development of version 7 and it would go.
The main mistake is the decision to continue the development of version 6 and not start from scratch in version 7 as it was in earlier times. For example, from version 4 to version 5 or version 5 to version 6

We ALL are ready! Unfortunatelly - the ROSv7 is "far far away galaxy". And ROSv6 is totally unusable in real BGP ISP enviroment.

You forget CCR family also completely unusable in large-scale CAPS deployment. Single CPU cannot handle main control process...

We are looking for real x86 server hardware now but again blocked because of NIC cards like i210/i350 not supported (even though intel has released Linux drivers for kernels that V6 is using...)

Help?

Do you plan to release x64 version in V7 ? X86 is outdated as it do not recognize more RAM than 2G.

Mikrotik should communicate the situation around v7 in a more professional way - its not a free time or fan based project which could dare to keep responding in way "its ready when its ready".
All the silence around the approximate release date is nothing but undermining company's credibility and does a terrible PR. Also not getting why Mikrotik keeps releasing minor bugfixes for v6 instead of focusing the resources to v7 development.....

maara. RouterOS v7 is not something we have announced or made available for purchase. There is no official launch date, or any other promises that we havent kept. The forum is for user discussion, only informal discussion is done here. If one of our support techs has said here on the forum that "it should be ready by the end of the year", it is just an informal approximation, not an official announcement.

v7 does not exist yet, so I'm sorry if this makes you even more disappointed, but I don't understand what else I can say. RouterOS developers are working hard.

Interesting. Apple's macOS 10 is now 15 years old. They have been releasing "point releases" for 14 years now. They never release a product until "it's ready".
No one is making you buy a Mikrotik router. You are welcome to use any of the other routers on the market. If you *needed* features that will be in RouterOS 7, then you should not have purchased a unit that is running 6.x. You should have purchased a different router that supports what you are looking for. Seems a lot like buying a 1 room house, when you needed 4 rooms. and then being upset that the builder didn't give you 3 more rooms for free.

That's not the same. It's like if you buy a room in a house and the seller promises you to be able to buy 3 more rooms soon, and after 3 years the rooms are still occupied.

Mikrotik has NEVER said 7.0 would be soon. They have always stated "when it's ready"

I'm too lazy to look for it but I'm pretty sure I saw in some presentation that alpha should be released by the end of 2015/early 2016, of course that was unofficial information but combined with "the v7 will have this and that" (especially a lot faster routing implementation) and now you have people complaining.

Personally I don't really care if it's called v6 or v7 as long as there would be steady improvements, however I kinda get the feeling that lately the dev team is more focused on products for home/office. I do hope it will change in the near future and we will be able to get more of our CCRs.

I might be wrong, but as far as I remember, it was always "we can't fix this now, because we need a new kernel", and not "v7 will have this and that"

That is what I meant. Can't be fixed now, need new kernel and that can't happen in a minor revision. It does not mean that this is already fixed in some unpublished version that MikroTik keeps from you. It means it is technically not possible to fix without major changes.

@normis, as an example: BGP Communities filtering by regex or delete BGP communities by regex. Asked a lot here. Please don't tell me that this needs a new Kernel.
I also saw comments like "we will not change anything on routing in v6".

@patrick7 so you are suggesting to stop development of v7 and start adding new features to broken v6 routing protocols?

No, please not! :-) But to make life more easy for all v6 users by implementing small improvements. AS Path Filtering with regex is already possible, so it should be a thing of a few minutes to implement the same on communities.

+1 - I do not think that it would be so hard to implement something like "strip BGP community <Number>:<Number> and/or <Number>:* and/or <Regex> from incoming router" or "match communities that match <Regex>". It is a little thing, but those little things keep your customers happy, even when ROSv7 development takes much longer than most of us had probably expected.

I also think that a date-less roadmap would be nice - just like: "ROSv7 Current Progress: Implemented XYZ, Implementing XYZ right now, Started Internal Alpha, ..." - it would not put stress on Mikrotik (as it would not have any dates), but it would disclose some rough progress information to the customers. I am kinda sure that such a roadmap would be way more appreciated than just "not yet", "not yet", "not yet", "WIP", "soon", "soon", "not yet", ... So like one of those "GitHub Issue (Release) ToDo Lists".

Forum section says "RouterOS v6 RC and v7 BETA". But apart from this thread I don't see anything about v7 nor any download links or something. So is there actually any v7 BETA or it's just misleading forum section name that probably should be changed in order to avoid misunderstanding?

You obviously didn't get what I am talking about... I am not moaning here that I so desperately want v7 and they should release an unfinished anything - I am ok with v6 and its features but what I don't like is how the way how the whole v7 thing is being communicated. Mikrotik should give some official statement to calm the water - saying that its done when its done will not help anyhow and doesn't sound good - thats all what I said and my only concern..
