Core router - performance.

Sun Sep 18, 2016 10:54 pm

Hi all.
My network traffic are about 1 Gbps at this moment and it looks like will be more in this year, so I must migrate my core routers to 10 Gbps. At this moment I use one Dell R610 as bgp (quagga), and another as core router (iptables + tc + ipset). This servers has enough cpu and memory for a long time (at this moment 1000+ users), but I must replace NIC for 10G (and Gbic too). Beacuse 10G NIC are expensive, I think maybe I could replace my routers with Mikrotik ;). So here is my question - does platform like CCR1009-8G-1S-1S+ do the job (it has SFP+)? Each user has two queues (upload and download) and individual internet access, summary traffic on all interfaces it's about 2 Gbps. Or maybe this platform it's not enough, and I must look for more pro solution?

Thanks for any suggestion.

Look for CCR1036-8G-2S+EM.
It consumes less power than your x86 based system and is more powerful.
Switch to PCQ for subsribers.

Thank you for an answear.
Could you tell me is there any test of this device in real live? I found simple performance test (https://routerboard.com/CCR1036-8G-2SplusEM), and only this topic: http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php?t=78086, but it's not enough information.

I have 60k pps, lot of queues, about 60k (up to 250k) connections in conntrack, and I'm afraid mikrotik maybe it's not enough. And think same real test is necessary in my case.

Rather go for the 1036 with two SFP+, every ethernet has its own path to the CPU, where as in the 1009 only ether 5-8 had its own dedicated paths, the rest share one.
If you need more SFP ports you can always uplink a 1016 SFP+ to one of the SFP+ ports on the 1036.

If money is no object then go for the 1072.
