Effective Priotizing only works with less than 85% of pipe

Wed Nov 08, 2006 11:31 am

Hello

I use pcq to share bandwidth and set p2p to low priority.

It works perfect if I set my max to 85% of my total pipe size

When I go higher it gets worst and worse.

Is there any way around this?

I hate to waste 15% of the pipe as I pay per Mb pipe.

I only have 2 Mb

Thanks :-)

Without putting a box at your ISP to control the traffic there I doubt you're going to see any better results.

To limit the bandwidth to individual clients you need to discard inbound packets. As these have already crossed the link then they'll need to be retransmitted thus wasting bandwidth.

Maybe try limiting the packet size with MSS mangle. That way you're throwing away smaller packets, but, there's more packet overhead to limit the benefit.

Andrew
