RB1100 - Merge switch2 and switch1 using VLANs

Sat Apr 15, 2017 5:32 pm

Hi folks.

I have a RB1100 AHX2 and I need to use all 10 ports (ether1-ether10) acting as switch, mixing some VLANs between them. The problem is: I'm not able to communicate between ports in differente switch groups (switch2 and switch1).

Example: I have a VLAN 10 in port ether4 (switch2 group) and the same VLAN 10 in port ether6 (switch1 group). I need communication between these ports, but one of the ports I need this VLAN tagged and in the other one I need it untagged. Is there any way to do it?

Attached I'm sending a diagram to illustrate the problem.

I appreciate the help in advance.

Put a VLAN interface of VLAN 10 on each of the mentioned ports, and place those 2 VLAN interfaces in a bridge.

You need to add the vlan interface on the 'Master Port' of each switch group and bridge them. You may also need to set up the swtich cpu-port to allow vlan 10.

This would use fastpath for any communication between switch groups and be limited to 1Gps, so try and group the ones that talk to each other a lot on one switch or the other.

Hi docmarius. I forgot to mention that in one port I need this VLAN tag and in the other port I need it untagged. Briding interface VLAN will not allow me to untag VLAN in one of the ports, right?

Thank you.

Take the untagged port out of the switch, and put it in a bridge with the VLAN port.
(In your example let's say VLAN10 hanging on ether4 and ether6 itself).

On receive, you need to see a VLAN interface as a filter, extracting tagged traffic from the parent interface (the VLAN traffic will not be seen anymore on that interface by the router), and a "untagger".
On transmit, the VLAN interface will tag the traffic and inject it into the parent interface.
