upgrade mikrotik

Wed Aug 09, 2017 10:56 pm

I'm new to Mikrotik and have a dumb question on upgrading the firmware. I go to the download page and download the latest mipsbe package for my device load that package into my device in the file tab and reboot. Everything looks fine and it's upgraded, however when I go to the terminal and use the /system routerboard print command it shows:
factory firmware: 3.3.3
current firmware: 3.3.3
upgrade firmware 3.3.4
I can issue the /system routerboard upgrade command and reboot to get on the 3.3.4 firmware.
My question is what's the difference from the mipsbe version and the firmware version b/c I always thought the mipsbe was the firmware.
Thank you and sorry for my ignorance...

IMO the firmware that we download from the mikrotik site should be called software. The firmware firmware is specific to each board, so think of it like a bios update. The other firmware, the one I'm calling software, then runs on top of that.

Do the updates happen automatically?
