Forum troubles

Thu Nov 30, 2017 1:35 pm

This is going to be an adventure just writing the posting...

Since almost a day the forum was offline or not reachable and this are the first life sings of it. I looked on twitter and facebook but no word about the troubles I expierened with this forum.

Also I noticed that for more than a day the direct search on active topics is not allowed anymore if I was not logged in.

I hope that this post is showing up after posting this. Wish me good luck.

I changed my forum theme to a forum theme that doesn't allow changing the forum theme, but as soon as I login to reply to this post, theme has gone back to the old default!

Board style works fine, and there are no errors in UCP. Make sure you clear your cache and try another browser.

Forum does have problems. Tested on two different computers, on both IE and Chrome.

Click on your icon, select User Control Panel
Then Board Preferences.

Here you will see the following option.
Edit global settings
Edit posting defaults
Edit display options
UCP_KARMA
BOARDWATCH_EDIT_OPTIONS
Edit notification options
Notices two of them i capital lettes. (They are capital due to missing module)
Try select UCP_KARMA or BOARDWATCH_EDIT_OPTIONS, it will fail with the message in my last post.

I did also post a screen shot in my other thread, showing the problem.
It may be that different user rights shows different options. If so, try to create a normal user and test your self.

The patient much better but the doctor forgot to remove some pins out of the bones that are healed now.

When I am not logged in I still can't select the active topics page. I don't see any secret stuff that in that page that should be behind a login.

A pitty that was not communicated in any way that there was an disturbance in the workings of the forum while Mikrotik has Twitter and Facebook. This to rest assure us that it is know and worked on in restoring the formum.

Why don't you want to log in?
We had a security breach by "Anonymous" (not logged in) user before the upgrade. So anonymous user got less permissions now. Maybe we will turn on Active Topics, but this is not a good way to read forum anyway.

Why don't you want to log in?
Because I am using plenty of devices to look into the forums. But I get logged off when using too much simultenous logins. Thus I almost ever hit the forum as anonymous.

"Active Topics" is my preferred way to look into forums.

Thus you completely broke my way looking into mikrotik forums since the last few days.

Either: Enable "Active Topics" for anonymous
Or: Enable much more active sessions for logged in users.

When I answer or write posting it is obvious that I have log in otherwise my username would not be present.

I have to login manually each time. It would be nice to have active topics back like it was before the mentioned security breach.

I find it good way, to use the forum and I visit many times each day the forum and to go along each section to check if there is something new would spoil my pleasure using the forum.

If I do not close the browser, I am logged inn all time. I only reboot PC when some goes wrong.

@normis
I do see that the karma is gone so you can not rate post anymore. Will it be back? If not I need to change my footer :)

Keeping your browser open all the time even when you are doing something else on your PC or device is now that wise because you can't what is happening there. I shut down my computer every time I leave. This erases my tmp/temp dir so on restart I have a clean start in that dir.

It is not going well and the forum/database is very often on a coffee break. I hope Mikrotik can fix this and they like to take it offline for a few days to fix it I would understand that.

Getting a lot of errors.
General Error
SQL ERROR [ mysqli ]

Connection refused [2002]

An sql error occurred while fetching this page. Please contact an administrator if this problem persists.
This, or error 2006 mysql server has gone.

504 Gateway Time-out
nginx

WHOA, SERVICE UNAVAILABLE!

Hey, speedy surfer, looks like all the demands overwhelmed me. Hopefully I will be ready in no-time!
Try Again?

Or even a total connection refused:
Unable to connect

Firefox can’t establish a connection to the server at forum.mikrotik.com.

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer’s network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.

Also it keeps logging me out at random times.

I understand that these issues will be ironed out but at the moment this forum is not very usable with these kinds of errors.

But the worst of all (for me) is that the prosilver theme is gone.

The current theme might look good at first glance but it's not usable. Usability is more important than flat large monochrome buttons and modern design.
There's a reason phpBB ships with prosilver and not with slickthemes-dead-domain.co theme ;)

With this theme I cannot find anything. I don't know which post is new on a given thread (thus continue reading from where I left last time). Prosilver had orange icons next to each unread reply on a thread.

Also I don't know on which threads I have posted my self (no icon indication in threads list as in prosilver).

The colors (or lack thereof) are a pain to the eyes.
Black text on white background. Great! Makes a nice contrast, perfect for the eyes! Just like the good old 90s :P

In one phrase: You've just downgraded the forum by removing prosilver..

I know most users out there did not use prosilver so you won't really care about what I have to say but nontheless I'll say it.
Please bring prosilver back otherwise I can't see myself using this forum much anymore. I cannot use a service that makes to want to pull my hair out each time I try to find or read something.
I understand that this is a community forum and I don't (or anyone else) really have a say to how you run it, but I just had to express my disappointment. I don't care about the technical problems. Those can be solved in time. But removing a useful theme in favor of a bad theme is not a technical issue but an arbitrary decision. I really hope you revert that decision.

PS: It took me a few retries to finaly be able to post this reply. The errors I got are mentioned in the beginning of this reply.
PS2: It took 49 seconds for the post to complete. So it's worse than even before as I mentioned a few times here: viewtopic.php?f=2&t=110841#p622022

Being logged in doesn't change anything. The files I am talking about return 404.

Another major disadvantage I just noticed with this theme is that quotes do not show the usernames. So quotes are essentially useless right now. You can't figure out in a glance who said what and you have to scroll back to find out. Terrible!

I see this as well.

1. Forum is extremely slow
2. This theme (canvas) does not show username on quoting.
3. This theme (canvas) does not show if you have posted in a thread.

Please give us back prosilver (default phpBB . Not sure if it solve number 1. but alt least 2 and 3.

But it still takes 13 second to post reply to this thread.

It may not be you as a poster, but that you can Subscribe on threads.
So Mikrotik need to turn Subscribe of globally so no email goes out when you reply to a topic.

So Mikrotik need to turn Subscribe of globally so no email goes out when you reply to a topic.
This is not a solution. I do want to receive mail notifications when someone replies on threads I subscribe to.

I use many phpBB forums (many of which have much larger userbase and traffic than Mikrotik's) and I don't see this delay when replying to threads.
A few months back we didn't have this delay when replying on threads, so something must have changed on the Mikrotik side.

I haven't looked the phpBB code for a very long time, but I think (if I recall correctly) phpBB will run a loop while a post is being made to send all the mail notifications to the users subscribed to the thread. In other words, mail notifications during a post are not asynchronous.

So if Mikrotik is using a remote SMTP it could make sense that it is slower (too many protocols and checks involved this way).
It maybe worth looking into using the local sendmail executable, as it is much faster in accepting the email than a remote SMTP.
And from there the local MTA can pass it to the remote SMTP (but without delaying phpBB) or deliver it directly to the end users.

Of course all of these are pure speculations as to what the problem might actually be with this delay.

PS: Thanks MikroTik for bringing back prosilver! (I couldn't thank you on the other thread as it is locked).

Re: Forum troubles

I did not say its a solution. I do like to get email on what I select as important topic.
But it was a tip to Mikrotik to try to find out if its the email system that slows posting down.

Edit. This post just take 6 seconds to enter. My last some hour back tok 13 seconds.
So if some changed, it may look a bit better.
