Winbox OUI identify

Fri Feb 16, 2018 9:25 am

What do you guys think of adding new feature in Winbox which would check first six signs of a MAC address and display which company is bound to this MAC? I'd would see this as new column in DHCP Server for example. This would be great timesaver! Builtin OUI search within Winbox.

MAC address database is available from here http://standards.ieee.org/develop/regauth/oui/oui.txt

I've asked MT support and the response was "we may consider it if more people would be interested".

That file is almost 4 Megabytes. Many RouterOS devices have 16MB total storage size.

Funny you should say that, we keep telling you that 16MB is not much. :)

But this file is unnecessarily large, e.g. http://anonsvn.wireshark.org/wireshark/trunk/manuf is much smaller, and you could compress it even further. Plus it wouldn't have to be at router, WinBox could use local copy.

C'mon Normis. Use local storage. Let Winbox download this file locally into computer. :) Make some GUI to update this file and that's all. :)

Does the file need to be on the router? I know dd-wrt have this feature to see a vendor behind a MAC...
I guess they check it somewhere online... ??

I was just about to say the exact same thing.
16MB flash is simply a joke in year 2018. It's one of those satisfying moments of 'I told you so' :P

+1 for the OUI feature in Winbox. It most likely won't happen due to the arbitrary decision to use 16MB flash on almost all boards since the last 2 years, but one can always hope :)
IIRC The Dude already supports that (at least v4.0b3).

I don't think so. Winbox could use local storage for that.

Compressed would be around 450KB, but then this feature need to be added everywhere (terminal, webfig etc.). Not just winbox, because not everyone is using winbox all the time.

I'm not against some WinBox-exclusive features, but it's true that when WebFig aims to be almost WinBox, it would be nice to have it there too. And for CLI too.

Anyway, even 450kB would fit already, but it's stil a lot, relatively speaking. One way to cut it down would be to include only short names, which would make it look less pretty, but still useful. That could bring the compressed size under 200kB. Some people may still see it as wasted space, but if it wasn't part of system package (could be in advanced-tools, i.e. optional), it would be probably fine. Also the format used for MAC addresses storage could be changed, using string "xx:xx:xx" to represent three bytes is wasting space (but it makes only small difference after compression).

First we could have it in Winbox. WebFig and CLI can come later. And I really don't think that CLI is most important here. Sure, system should have feature consistency/unification, but hey I would not mind if it was Winbox exclusive feature for some time.

So MT devs… Yay or nay?

I would rather have it as an extra available column than re-writting the mac address.

In paint by copy paste, it seems. Nice idea but he rather should upgrade ros and delete the admin user. It's much more important than redrawing buttons from the right side to the top.

Hello Normis. But if this functionality was for Winbox only, that would not be a problem, right?

I found it attractive

No need to implement it in console, there is no point in that, only winbox and webfig
