Cloud Core Routers with UPS package crashing

Thu Feb 22, 2018 2:41 am

We have many cloud core routers on the network and we have them installed with IPV6 package and the UPS package. Each router has a Tripp Lite UPS plugged in via a micro USB cable which allows us to monitor the UPS for power outages. I'm not sure where the issue is occurring or if it's related to the UPS package or simply having something plugged into the USB port, but we have alot of issues where the router reboots and then reports a potential Kernel issue. Router reboots are very random, but we have 2-3 per week on a network of 200+ CCRs.
Anyone else have issues like this?
For what it's worth, if it's related, we can no longer update routers remotely because they typically would crash with kernel errors after rebooting the router to update it.

According to Mikrotik, there is some kind of bug (I'll call it a bug, but maybe they refer to it differently):
"This is a combination of a software and hardware problems. You can assume that you are plugging in and unplugging USB cable countless times per second which causes problems and since RouterOS has to detect these actions all the time it can crash.

Yes, we can work into this direction in future RouterOS releases, but this is not a common problem. This is the first time when we see so many actions on USB and that is why we right away could see that problem must be caused by that."

So right now we have alot of routers with this issue and some without it. Hard to tell if it's due to the cable being used (which is the Micro USB adapter cable that comes with the CCR routers, and a standard printer cable attached to it) or if it's due to a problem on the Micro USB port.

Hoping Mikrotik fixes the bug.
