PPPoE consumes resource of wireless?

I am using version 2.9.38 and when active pppoe server, the maximum that I obtain of troughput between AP and the station is 700kbits. Without pppoe this troughput goes for 4 Mbps.
The pppoe server consumes resources of the wireless interface?
