Advice on distributed WLAN AP setup requested

Wed Jun 27, 2018 11:35 am

I need some advice on how to best solve the following issue:

My iPad/iPhone devices do not reliably roam between two APs in a big house.
Although a device is already close to an alternative AP, it still sticks to the previous one with bad signal strength.

I tried a setup with two WRT54GL running WDS under DDWRT. (same channel, same SSID)
This works better, however i am not satisfied and would like to know if there is any better solution for (almost) "seamless" roaming?
Maybe kicking the client with a rule when the RSSI is too low forcing it to connect to the stronger AP? (this is not possible with DDWRT i guess)

It is not clear from your question whether you have also Mikrotik APs or not; if you do, then yes, the idea of limiting signal strength and thus kicking the phone out when its signal becomes too weak does work on them, using wireless access list or capsman access list depending on how they are configured.
Instead of writing novels, post /export hide-sensitive. Use find&replace in your favourite text editor to systematically replace all occurrences of each public IP address potentially identifying you by a distinctive pattern such as my.public.ip.1.

I actually only have two WRT54GL devices and don't know if it's worth exchanging them for Mikrotik APs.
If using WDS is definately the best solution, then i will stay with my WRT54GLs.

that WRT devices are prety old

Does not even support 802.11n than means are almost 10 years old

for wireless setup like this i recommend you to make a site survey to identify the better approach to use

Then you can select mikrotik devices more appropriate for your project and get the best results

For wifi mikrotik offers the most varied and powerful range of functionalities and tools, and a very affordable prices

but the most important element is proper design
