The current ROS software update and firmware upgrade process is way too slow and time-consuming. While two reboots might be no problem for a home router or AP, in fact it is a HUGE PROBLEM for core routers having lots BGP sessions. In combination with the still very poor BGP convergence time on all the CCR models with full BGP feeds, the current situation is very unsatisfactory.
The new /system routerboard settings set auto-upgrade=yes setting was a first step in the right direction, although it still requires the second reboot for the firmware upgrade to be performed manually. It would be quite nice if the whole update/upgrade process would be a single click/command including all the necessary reboots. The second reboot for the firmware upgrade could even be speeded up by skipping the interface and routing engine initialization once for that purpose.
Thanks
