Transferring L4 license from dead rb411 to new rb411

Tue Sep 04, 2018 11:37 pm

Hi,
I have a Mikrotik RB411 that is about 7 years old and is dead. It doesn't respond to a computer connected to it with an ethernet cable.

I bought an L4 license for it and I would like to transfer this L4 license to a new RB411.

How do I do this?

Thanks,

Don James

Please see https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:L ... PC_license, section:
Q:I lost my RouterBOARD, can you give me the license to use on another system?

A:The RouterBOARD comes with an embedded license. You cannot move this license to a new system in any way, this includes upgrades applied to the RouterBOARD while it was still working.

Your only hope may be that "dead" does not mean "lost" … ?

Just browsing the product line ... all current RB411 models come with a L4 license. So, maybe non-issue?

Yes, I meant "broken". I DID NOT mean lost or stolen.

The RB411 DOES NOT come with L4 license. It comes with L3 license. Look here: https://mikrotik.com/product/RB411

I still need and answer to my question.

Thanks,

donjames

I'd say the quote from manual was clear enough, i.e. license dies with the router, upgrades included. If you're feeling lucky, you can try to convince MikroTik support that it's not fair.

Thanks for the answer. I suspected that Mikrotik would not renew the license.

I would probably have better luck convincing Mikrotik that pigs fly.

I don't know, I didn't try it myself. Worst case, they'll say "no".

I do think it's unfair, especially when upgrade is for full price. If there would be big discount to go from L3 to L4, then ok, let it die with the board. But for $45, it's not nice. And if you'd have bought standalone x86 license, then according to manual:
Can I move the license to another HDD ?
If your current HDD drive is destroyed, or can no longer be used, it is possible to transfer the license to another HDD. You will have to request a replacement key (see below) which will cost 10$

What is a Replacement Key
It is a special key which is issued by the Support Team if you accidently lose the license, and the Mikrotik Support decides that it is not directly your fault. It costs 10$ and has the same features as the key that you lose. Note that before issuing such key, the Mikrotik Support can ask you to prove that the old drive is failed, in some cases this means sending us the dead drive.
So you could work with that, because in a way, your current "HDD" did break and it was not your fault.

The RB411 DOES NOT come with L4 license. It comes with L3 license. Look here: https://mikrotik.com/product/RB411

I still need and answer to my question.
The product you referenced has been discontinued. The CURRENT RB411 variants come with L4 license.
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Hi Proximus,
You are right.
I was looking for an RB411 for sale and couldn't find one. As you stated, the current RB411 variants come with an L4 license.
