S+RJ10: RJ45 SFP+ 10/100/1000M/2.5G/5G/10G copper module

Thu Sep 27, 2018 3:14 am

What can I do with this SFP module?
I plugged it into my RB2011 and I am thinking I can use it like another interface?

Pros?

I do not think the RJ45 sfp+ module can be used in your RB2011. It only has one SFP port. So you may connect your RB2011 to gigabit switch through SFP modules.

So if I have another RB2011 and another SFP module same as first one I can link these two RB2011 through SFP... and then?

The SFP can also be used as a LAN port if you have the proper module.

I was thinking I would be able to use it as another 1GB Lan port, but how? It will not get an IP from DHCP at the moment... And then?

RB2011 have a fan? Not sure.. But why do you ask?

The product page for this module states that it is intended for devices with active cooling.

There are 2 modules:
S-RJ01 - SFP module that have 1Gbps link to CPU and can handle 10/100/1000 Ethernet
S+RJ10 - SFP+ module that have 10Gbps link to CPU and can handle 10/100/1000/2,5G/5G/10G Ethernet
There are only limited amount of boards that support both 1Gbps and 10Gbps link to CPU, so you can use both.

These are the rules i follow:

1) On SFP use S-RJ01, on SFP+ use S+RJ10, if any other combination works - consider it a bonus :)
2) If you need ethernet, get device with regular ethernet - SFP to RJ45 module is designed for specific use cases, as it drains 2-4x the power and produce 2-4x more heat as regular optical module, so on multi-SFP-cage device you can't simply use these modules in all cages.

Okay, so we have established the one I have (S-RJ01) is indeed compatible with RB2011..
So how do I make it work like another Gbit interface? I set auto-negotiation off and it shows link up but it will NOT take an IP from DHCP... and then?

You made an RJ10 thread and now you say what you have is RJ01.

I knew you were going to say that.
That is true; I posted wrong in the topic; as I have S-RJ01 SFP module.
