[Feature Request] IPv6 Fasttrack

Sun Nov 11, 2018 12:25 pm

I was led to believe that the Hex S (RB760IGS) achieves full gigabit throughput. This is not the case with IPv6. Due to the lack of IPv6 fasttrack support, IPv6 throughput maxes out at roughly 500 Mbit/s. That alone is bad enough, but on a DS-Lite connection, IPv4 is tunneled via IPv6, so even IPv4 throughput is limited by the lack of IPv6 fasttrack support. To test that this is indeed the cause of the low throughput, I disabled all IPv6 firewall rules. This allows the router to use fastpath acceleration even in absence of fasttrack support, and indeed then routing IPv6 at full gigabit speed is possible. But what good is that without any firewall capability?

Please add IPv6 fasttrack support, urgently.

+1 obviously in critical demand in the modern world. everything we deploy nowadays is ipv6 with some ipv4 workaround/nat solution.

It's 2019. Time to support IPv6 acceleration.

200 Mbit/s via IPv6-over-PPPoE on hAP ac..

I will support the notion that it's time to bring acceleration to IPv6. Please.

I was not aware that any Mikrotik Products supported DS-Lite, please explain how you support this.

It is my understanding that fastpath is currently only available for IPv4.

They don't support DS-Lite. But DS-Lite is just native IPv6 with an IPIPv6 tunnel to a CGNAT gateway for IPv4. Mikrotik routers can do the tunneling, but lack the automatic configuration and the necessary DHCPv6 features to script the setup. If you know the domain name of the CGNAT gateway (the "AFTR"), you can set up the tunnel manually. See RFC 6333 for details. Be warned though, the throughput will be limited due to the lack of IPv6 fast tracking support. The router can use fast path acceleration only if there are no IPv6 firewall rules.

According to MikroTik's own documentation there is currently no IPv6 fastpath support.

+1

There is not NAT situation anymore with IPv6 (well.... mostly), but a boost in perf could be nice, with IPv6 being the futur and more and more used.

hAP ac2 (and all new IPQ401x based gear) happily can do up to 1Gbps.
i test this regularly with the on-board speedtest (tool speedtest) command.

but ipv6 fastrack is a must.

btw, instead of ds-lite i'd have a nat64 gw :-)
and xlat464 & dns64 resolver in the clients.

Can you explain it a little bit more?
nat64 gw / xlat464 & dns64 resolver in the clients.

Best case will be a config example to get my ISP Provider connection in a Mikrotik RB433 OS 6.44.6 configured.
My ISP provides a 56bit IPv6 Prefix Pool and a IPv6 address per DHCP.
IPv4 is connected thrue a DS-LITE-Tunnel with a AFTR Gateway.

Tested with a AVM Fritz Box everything fine!
But I'm not able to configure it at the mikrotik router
Especially the AFTR Gateway, Ive tried with the ipipv6 tunnel but it dosen't work

How can support in this case i guess I#m not the first one who needs the config in detail.

Would be nice if it atleast scaled right on cpus somehow.
With a simple test using fast.com with more than 2 parallel connections, on a hAP ac2, cpu3 goes up to 100% and the rest of them sit idle, tested with with ROS 7 Beta 2, same thing.
Bandwidth capped because of this under 400mbps out of ~900.
LE: Might be because of PPPoE as my ISP uses IPv6 PD over PPPoE.

May i Know how it will be come on PPPoE and DHCP.

Maybe in v7 ?

With a ccr1036, I hit approx 2gb/sec per connection, while I can hit more than 9gb/s with ipv4 and fastrack. Of course, if you multiply the connections, you can be at full speed overall, but, it's not ideal.

unfortunately it seems impossible for now. they said that they should add route cache first:

Hello
FastPath depends on route cache and there is no route cache in v7.
FastTrack cannot work if there is no FastPath support. Since IPv6 currently does not support FastPath, you cannot run FastTrack. Currently, there is no ETA for such functionality.

I can only get 600mbps+- without firewall, with firewall it maxed at 350mbps, what did you do with hAP ac2 to get it run at 1gbps in ipv6? Can share to us?

People are not going to be happy if they are switched to IPv6 and suddenly they don't have fasttrack anymore.

True, but I have no choice since recently ipv4 traffic is really jam in my country, switched to ipv6 and much better now, ping plotter also show lower ping to facebook youtube and so.

there was nothing special in the config. the device was connected via ether1 to a 60ghz IPv6 only radio, and received IPv6 address and default route via DHCPv6 (request address) - so it was just connected. on the other part of the 60GHz network there was a CCR, with bw server enabled.
there were no fw rules for the input chain, as the network was closed and all customer traffic was transmitted over EoIPv6 tunnels (started by the hap ac2 and terminated by the CCR). i scheduled the speediests on the hapac2 in regular intervals with 1-1 minute gaps between them so no parallel tests were ran in the network. the results ranged between 600mbps and 970mbps. speedtest client was run on the hap ac2 and the CCR was the server.
the 60ghz network had in average 11 hops between the clients and the server, and it was entirely routed.

Disabling the firewall is not feasible in many situations. With firewall my hap ac2 can do about 940Mbps in IPv4 fasttrack but only close to 500 Mbps with IPv6.
Even if I was willing to escape this limitation by switching to more powerful hardware: There are no official IPv6 routing performance benchmarks of mikrotik hardware available. Can anybody provide some numbers for rb4011's real world IPv6 performance with stateful firewall enabled?

IPv6 is missing lot of features, Hope Mikrotik Team will do the needful to implement all the necessary features soon in ROS.

Changed from hAP ac2 to ER-X who has lower spec of CPU, but with hardware nat, finally max out my ISP speed of 840/220mbps for both IPv4 and IPv6, with almost no CPU usage, MT please do something for IPv6.

I ended replacing my hap ac² router with rb4011, so MikroTik's decision not to provide IPv6 Fasttrack even earned them some money this time. Should have switched vendors, but getting my existing config up and running within minutes was just too tempting... :(

Now that I've already spent this money: May we have IPv6 Fasttrack for even more performance, please?

Recently bought an RB4011. So far the missing IPv6 FastTrack doesn't drag me down (simply because it has so much CPU available to it).
However, I'd still love to keep my CPU less utilized when I push gigabit IPv6 (jumps to 25% use with gigabit in one direction, so it'd probably be fine for bidirectional, but with v4 it goes to like 5-6% and that's it)

So yeah, +1 for v6 FastTrack (FastPath can't work as I need firewall rules to work)!

I'm currently using a hap ac^2. Since there's no fast-track for IPv6, would switching to a RB4011 help me reach ~940Mbps as I'm getting on IPv4 currently?

I can saturate my gigabit line with IPv6 at about 20-30% CPU load (got like 30 IPv6 firewall rules in place). So, yeah, that should work out.

Well, I don't know what to think anymore. Apparently the server I was testing on IPv6 before had some issues because I can get these speeds on an IPv6 connection at 30% CPU load on a hap ac^2.
Tested on https://speedtest.xfinity.com/ where I can select between IPv4/6. Only problem is I'm 8 time zones away from the servers, so I can't get really accurate results (close to 940Mbps I mean).
Guessing that upgrade is gonna have to wait a bit, but it's still gonna happen since I want something more "future proof".

Are there there any comments from MikroTik about the missing fasttrack support for IPv6? Is it at least a planned feature?
