Strange ethernet autonegotiation problem on RB1100AHx4

Fri Jan 11, 2019 6:29 am

Hello everyone,

This is kind of strange problem that I am currently having.
My setup:
<<Internet>>-------------<< CCR1009 >>(eth2)-----------------------(eth1)<< RB1100 >>

In CCR1009 :
1) Port eth2 is set to auto negotiation and set to advertise 10/100/1000Mbps.
2) In interface status it says advertising 10/100/1000Mbps and link partner advertising 10/100Mbps.

In RB1100:
1) Port eth1 is set to auto negotiation and set to advertise 10/100/1000Mbps.
2) In interface status it says advertising 10/100Mbps and link partner advertising 10/100/1000Mbps.
3) Eth1 is in WAN list and all other ports are in LAN list. No LAN bridge.

What I did so far :
Note: Using same patch cord to test in this scenario.
1) Connected my laptop to CCR1009(eth2). Gbps link is auto negotiated. Conclusion : No issue with the CCR1009.
2) Connected my laptop to RB1100(eth1). Gbps link is auto negotiated. Conclusion : No hardware issue with the port.
3) Connected my laptop to RB1100(eth2). Gbps link is auto negotiated. Conclusion : Eth2 is good.
4) Connected CCR1009(eth2) to RB1100(eth2). Again 100Mbps link auto negotiated. Conclusion : ??

Current result : Devices connected to RB1100 are connected to Internet with a maximum speed of 100Mbps.
Desired result : Need 1Gbps link between CCR1009 and RB1100.

I hope I made myself clear. I don't know where to look for now. Please suggest.

Hi

First to do: upgrade software if possible. Including the firmware.

Some thoughts:
Have you tried other ports on both devices?
What if you set them both to fixed 1G? can they communicate?
Physical review of ports?

I had a similar issue with a short patch cord with a bit of a twist like kink at one end. It tested ok on a tester but the RB1100AHx4 didn't like it for 1G.

Physical review of ports?
Firmware and ROS is upto date on both devices : 6.43.8
I checked the changelogs for 6.43.8, I see some changes for VLAN 1 for RB1100 devices. May be they have introduced any bugs?

Today, I connected my laptop to eth2 of CCR1009 and only 100Mbps is auto negotiated. Changed port on CCR1009 to eth5 port and now getting 1Gbps link.
Connected to RB1100 on eth1 to CCR1009 eth5, getting 1Gbps link. Problem is solved for now.

But the strange thing is that when the link auto negotiates to 100Mbps, in CCR1009 Interface status tab, link partner advertising says 10M full and 100M full. It made me believe that the RB1100 has some problem advertising the link.

Thank you for your suggestions.

I thought of it, changed the cable but no luck with 1G link. Used the same cable on another port gets 1G link.
Today the port on CCR1009 which gave me 1G link with my laptop is not getting 1G link today! Checked with multiple cables. Strange!

Possible causes may be :
1) Hardware issue with the port on CCR
2) Crappy cables
3) Software issue on RB1100

Not sure about the exact cause for this problem.

Thank you for your reply!
