Using RouterOS as a local DNS server?

Thu Feb 07, 2019 6:02 pm

I have a CCR that's functioning as a primary router at a location. It's doing DHCP.

Client is using VPN, which I've also setup via the CCR.

Client does not have a DNS server. This will be resolved soon, but for now, I need VPN users to be able to resolve machine names on the local network.

I've made the machine names static on the CCR, and set the first DNS server as the CCR and set it to "Allow Remote Requests" but I still can't resolve if I try to ping say, "KELLYS-PC" via the Mikrotik Terminal It just says it can't resolve the name. Pinging "google.com" pings no problem.

Any ideas?

RouterOS doesn't do DHCP DNS registration. You can use a script to add and remove static entries if you need this.

It sounds to me like the records are already added manually. If they didn't resolve from Windows clients, it could be explained easily, because Windows always try to add domain to bare hostnames. But it it's from RouterOS console, it should work, the resolver there asks exactly for what you give it.
