inconsistent speeds across mulitple hops

Thu Feb 28, 2019 1:21 am

Dear Sirs,

We have a MIK RB1100x edge router connected to a Spectrum 200Meg light fiber to
the net, pulling an average 150 megs at the time this test was done.

From the edge router we have a 2 hop ubi wireless link to a remote end
customer on an ubi bridge. The wireless link itself is capable of at
least 50 megs but has shared usage on it.

Speeds tests from the end customer to our edge router show 9 megs
download.

From the end customer to fast.com on the net downloads show 3 megs.

Speed tests from the edge router to fast.com show 72 megs.

Can someone please explain what is going on?

Thanks in advance,

Homer W Smith

Hi,

Is all that ubnt links connecting at 1G FD.

If one end of the link is 1G and the far side is only 100M you can run into flow issues that kills TCP

Thank you for your response. There is one link that is mixed 100/1000, I will look into it.

How greedy is fast.com?

If I run fast.com from the edge router will it use all available bandwidth taking it away from
other users that are being serviced by the same router various hops away?

So if our link were 100 megs upstream and 75 is in use by remote customers, and I run fast.com, will
it show me 25 or 100?

Unless you're running AirFiber the wireless links are running half duplex. "were talking wireless not the Ethernet link"
multi-hop half duplex wireless backhauls annihilate TCP throughout as it was never designed for latency.
Speed test from each end of your network with UDP and then try with TCP and see what happens. UDP will look great typically and the TCP will look like Dial-up or maybe DSL.
If your running half duplex wireless put in an AirFiber or something comparable that is also full duplex and will make your network perform properly.
