ftp server on device on MT router behind parent router

Fri May 03, 2019 10:49 am

My MT router has access to www through a parent router. The MT has been assigned an IP of 192.168.0.2/24. The device with the ftp server is 192.168.99.2/24

The intention is to forward everything with a destination port of 9021 to this ftp on port 21. NAT forwarding is set up to do this

The MT router actually has two subnets: 192.168.99.0/24 and 192.168.88.0/24. Connections from either subnet to 192.168.0.2:9021 all work well with no problems as intended

The problem is with connections from www:
  • The parent router forwards port 9021 to 192.168.0.2:9021
  • MT router then forwards to 192.168.99.2:21
  • But I can see from trying to connect using WinSCP that the ftp server is returning the internal address of 192.168.0.2, which, of course, means nothing to client

New, but learning fast about MT. Any ideas how to solve this?

FTP uses both port 21 and a range of passive ports. Only forwarding port 21 will not be sufficient.

Realising that this is impossible on the parent router I have, I've boldly switched the router from "router" to "modem" mode so the ftp is now working and the network is overall faster :) :) :)

Many thanks
