RB750GR3 for a 30 PCs Gaming event?

Tue May 14, 2019 6:45 pm

Hi guys,
we are planing a one time gaming event and i need to decide on the router... i need to set up a router with load balancing of 3 ISPs, one with 300MB/15MB, other with 100MB/8MB and finally 100MB/5MB.

Do you think the RB750GR3 is up to the task? The most important thing for this is balance the upload speed and having low ping.

Nope, Gr3 won't do. Since you want ot balance, you'll need to skip FastTrack. Without it gr3 won't be able to cope with bandwidth.

You need more power. 4011 will do for example

Balancing close to 30 mbps upload shouldn't be a problem for that router. But if anyone decides to starts to download at anything close to max download speeds you posted, you'll need to move into the CCR range so make sure you cap download speeds.
Unless those are indeed mB/s and not mbps in which case you'll need to look at something like a RB3011.

Won't be enough a hAP ac2? About a quarter of the price, and can route 980 Mbps with 25 firewall rules and 512 bytes packet size.

I can't see 30 players taking more than 20 Mbps during matches. When downloading upgrades, sure. But you do it before playing...

512 bytes are fairly large packets. Most packets are a lot smaller than that. A lot of acks, etc. So the number you should look at is the one on the right, for 64 bytes. Mainly for two reasons, first it kinda provides a worst case scenario which is what you want to look at if you're looking for assured performance. Second, these are lab tests and not real world. When considering real world performance there's often other stuff going on on the router that also drains performance. You're usually NATing, the bridge consumes CPU time, OP will be marking packets for the 3 WANs he'll be using, etc. So even though some packets will be larger than 64 bytes and you may not be using 25 filter rules (10 is usually min but mangle rules consume about the same CPU time as filter rules), real world performance is still going to be less (sometimes a lot less) than those numbers.

So it all comes down to what he's expecting. 30 mbps up and 40 down full duplex tcp traffic over 3 interfaces can reasonably be expected from your suggestion. About 30-35 total will work from 750Gr3/hEX.

Well, each game is different, but this is my stats (from dedicated interface on a hEX Gr3, serving 18 L4D2 servers). Uptime is 9d 20:39:20. Interface is dedicated to the server. It is used by the served games and server upgrade.

With 13 occupied games, serving 39 users, I got about 3 Mbps of traffic. I don't know what games he will play, neither their bandwidth usage, but I have never heard of a game using 1Mbps/player in a match.

The games are going to be Fortnite, LOL and CS:GO, 10 pcs for each. Fortnite is by far the harder one. CS.GO dont uses much, and im not sure about LOL.

This link is interesting:
https://www.whistleout.com.au/Broadband ... ine-gaming

Fortnite would use 100MB/h - something like 228 kbps
CS:GO would use 250MB/h - about 569 kbps (I'm thinking this one is a little too much, but I'm more used to CS:Source)
And they say LOL uses about 45 MB/h - something like 100kbps.
They say TF2 would use 80MB/h. That would be about 182 kbps. It's spot on with what I see. On a server with 24 players I got 180 kbps/player on TF2.

So, there you go.

Lol I haven't played a lot of online games in recent years. Actually I've never played a lot of online games after Team Fortress 2 and the original Counter Strike. Recently became a dad so don't have much time for gaming anymore. =)

Anyway, your numbers sound about right. Online gaming has always been about roundtrip ("ping") times for packets rather than broadband and about the same regarding download and upload. So I think the hEX or the hAP would do the job. Though I'd still put some caps in so that no PC starts downloading windows updates or whatever and maxes out the router's CPU for everyone. Like if it did happen the only one dropping packets will be the knucklehead who forgot to turn all his updates off.

Just don't expect to be load balancing 500 mbps down, though for downloads (i.e. large packets) a number closer to that would be achievable.

I don't get why you think hEX won't handle it.

I get it, thanks.

The other option what i dont think is better, i would rather do load balancing, the PPC method should work, But the other thing i was thinking is disable fastrack only for port 5, connect 20 pcs on it and then use mangle rules to force those 20 ips to go trought the other 2 gateways.
