Which CAT4/CAT6 LTE

Sat Jun 01, 2019 6:00 am

I'm planning to build a 4G router using the RBM11G and want to know which LTE modem I should use that'll give me the least amount of config headaches, but also the best performance.

Ideally I'd like a CAT6 modem (Sierra MC7430 or Quectel EP06-E), but these seem to need hacks like covering pins to get going, even on the latest version of RouterOS?

If the CAT6 modems are too fussy, what's the best CAT4 modem then? I've been looking at the Quectel EC25-AU or Huawei ME909s-120

Unfortunately the Mikrotik R11e-LTE modem doesn't support the bands I need (B5, 850MHz).

I'm currently looking at doing the same, good call on the RBM11G. Compact, PoE and 1 Gig Eth.

I found this video of a guy testing a Huawei ME909s-120 in the RBM11G - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ONzyai1YsPo

I did some research, it looks like newer category modems (5 and up) use M.2 connections (not mPCIe). Do converters exist? Would the RouterOS support them?

The RouterOS will recognise the LTE chip as an interface, it should run smoothly but some options may be limited, pass-through etc.

Here is a list of tested/supported modems - https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:P ... lar_modems

Have you made a purchase yet?

Any updates, I really need to come up with a good cell setup for mikrotik. The wap-lte-us model barley works, sierra wireless mc7430 is on the list but I cant seem to find anyone reporting it being stable and/or even close to easy to configure.

I am running a EC25-AU in a LtAP, its currently running outback Australia. Its with 2x 3dBi Antennas and is working a treat on 3G( getting ~-81dBm). 4G lte b28 700MHz also works well, but getting a better signal off 3G 850Mhz at the moment and due to my extreme tower edge location. My phones I have here Samsung j5 pro and an iPhone XR have no signal and using same provider as the LtAP SIM. So happy with the EC25 and a couple of 3dBi externals omni antennas.

MC7304 running with RB912 in Australia for the last 3 years. No trouble with the modem at all.
Not sure if you'd want to use it for a new system since it is now obsolete. Might be worth picking one up on eBay to save taping pins on the MC74XX series?
