IPv6 offload needed

Tue Mar 31, 2020 10:54 pm

I'm using hAP ac2 as main router with an Audience to cover my house, due to current internet traffic IPv4 is really slow in my country so I decided to try IPv6, my ISP speed is 800mbps/200mbps, with IPv4 I have no problem to max out my ISP speed as 839mbps/220mbps with 10% CPU usage, but with IPv6 it dropped to 300mbps/200mbps with CPU 100% load, firewall is on. Then I replaced the main router to a cheap China YouHua WR1200JS (MT7621+128MB DDR2) which flashed to a custom firmware called Padavan, a customized Asus firmware same as Merlin, it gave me 839mbps/220mbps with IPv6.

I wonder when will MikroTik add the IPv6 offload? Since a cheap MT7621 can do, why not IPQ4019? Is there any restriction for this chipset?

Thanks

It's a limitation of RouterOS.

The hEX doesn't have it too, an uses the same chipset as the chinese You bought:

I think the problem here is the missing fasttrack support for IPv6. So either you buy a stronger router or switch router vendor with ipv6 offload support.

The a look here: https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:IP/Fasttrack

EDIT:

Btw, no mikrotik router has offloading support for routing ipv4 nor ipv6, Since they don't have an asic chip build-in, or it's not implemented in routeros. All work is done by the cpu. Some Routerboard have IPSec offload support for certain ciphers and hash algorithms but thas it. The bandwidth boost with fasttrack for ipv4 is accomplish why disabling certain features in the packet chain for example queues and ipsec.

Email support@mikrotik.com and request IPv6 FastPath support.

It's been asked for years.

I guess it needs a lot of work under the hood to accelerate the ipv6 flow.
