MTU setting on wanpmc

Tue Jun 05, 2007 4:44 am

The other side of my link is a cisco. They want me to set the MTU on my wanpmc DS3 card to 4470. The max seems to be 1600 why is that?

4470 would be a very excessive MTU I would think. I've got a few wanpmcs and I've never had to change the MTU on any of them. Are you sure they're referring to the MTU? They might be talking about the clock rate or something. In which case, 44736 might make sense I guess.

The router on the other side was set to 4470 for a good long time before we realized that I was not. Now we are both set to 1500 and it works. I don't understand why there is a limit of 1500 if the hardware can do more. Is the a bug or a bas assumption of the MT development team?

Well lets ask...

Development guys, can you fix this? I don't know what the max is with Cisco (I could try to find out) but my guess is that that would be a good target.

I would think that when even making a decision about interfacing with other equipment, looking at cisco for specs is a probably a good idea.

Thank you...

The tech on the provider side says that MTU=4470 is standard with DS3 equipment. And that we will keep having low throughput until we fix this. I would like to stay with MT but will probably have to switch if not fixed.

By the way, I left a message for ncomm (th esales people for SBEi) tech person. Will have more info when they get back to me. I wanted to ask them if there is any reason the MTU can't be set higher then 1500 on their device. I think MTU is a layer 2 feature, and so this would be a software issue. But I just wanted to make sure.
