[Question]: Anyone running a MA5671A GPON ONU at 2.5 GBit/s

Mon Feb 01, 2021 2:10 pm

Dear Mikrotik-lovers,

is anyone able to run a Huawei MA5671A GPON ONU with 2.5 GBit/s in the SFP+ port of a RB4011 or CRS328?
Mine is only connecting at 1.0 GBit/s:
/interface ethernet monitor s04-GPON-ONU
                     name: s04-GPON-ONU
                    status: link-ok
          auto-negotiation: done
                      rate: 1Gbps
               full-duplex: yes
           tx-flow-control: no
           rx-flow-control: no
               advertising:

        sfp-module-present: yes
               sfp-rx-loss: no
              sfp-tx-fault: no
                  sfp-type: SFP-or-SFP+
        sfp-connector-type: SC
       sfp-link-length-9um: 20000m
           sfp-vendor-name: HUAWEI
    sfp-vendor-part-number: MA5671A
       sfp-vendor-revision: 0000
         sfp-vendor-serial: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

The 1.25/2.5 Gbit/s indication is the interface connection between the SFP and the router. The 1 Gbit/s is the interface between the SFP and the fiber.

So all is working correct.

Your RX power is a bit high and are all connectors all pushed full in.

Update: I now see that there are ones that transmit at 2.5 Gbit/s and receive at 1.25 Gbit/s. However the speed indicated by Mikrotik will be 1 Gbit/s. This could change if the will be more speeds being supported by Mikrotk.

The raw GPON interface always operates at 2.5Gbps down / 1.25Gbps up, regardless of the SFP interface rate. GPON supports upto 1:128 split ratios which would be 20Mbps down / 10Mbps up if everyone were using the service at the same instant.

The ONU converts ethernet packet payloads to/from GEM (GPON Encapsulation Method) frames, unless your ISP offers services greater than 1Gbps and builds their infrastructure with low split ratios there is no point running the SFP interface at a higher rate.

Dear msatter,

thanks for answering and pointing me to the RX power.
Which value do you expect here?

I replaced all my fiber cables and nothing changed.
Also I replaced the Huawei SFP by a CarlitoxxPro V2. The CarlitoxxPro works at 2.4/-17.8.

I would expect lower than 10. Your range values should be mentioned in the datasheet of the module.

As you write it works fine and the other module even goes lower.

I would like to ask a question about the "Huawei MA5671A GPON ONU"

Is the GPON SFP module currently working in your GPON network ?
How long has it been on-line ?
Is it mounted outside in a Nema air-tight enclosure ?

Years ago , I tried a dozen Mikrotik GPON SFP modules. Mine were installed in Mikrotik routers that were inside outdoor Nema enclosures and all of them died on the first warm/hot summer day.

I am still interested in using Mikrotik routers in my GPON networks , but I want to find out what works and is reliable.

Yes, works on FTTH Deutsche Telekom in Germany.
A couple of days. Others report months.
It's inserted into the SFP+ of an CRS328 together with 2 DAC and one 10G fiber module.

In that case, 2.5gb support mean HSGMII support. Mikrotik devices , afaik, don't support it.
