Polling of mikrotik.com

Wed Feb 10, 2021 10:20 pm

Hi guys,

I am experiencing a DNS query for mikrotik.com every 30 seconds from my Routerboard.

I checked that:
  • IP/Cloud has no entry
  • Interface/Detect Internet has "none" for all I/F lists

Does anybody know what else could cause this polling?

Cheers,
Christian

System - Clock - Auto Timezone: set it to manual in the next tab.

Hi msatter,

thanks for your advice. I checked it (see screenshots).
It seems that something else is repsonsible - any more ideas?

Cheers,
Christian

System > Packages > Check for upgrades => upgrade.mikrotik.com
IP > Cloud > DDNS Enabled => cloud2.mikrotik.com
Interfaces > Detect Internet => cloud.mikrotik.com

These are all subdomains. Are you sure the device is actually resolving the domain name 'mikrotik.com' (without subdomain)?
Are there clients behind the device? Is DNS > 'Enable Remote Requests' enabled?

IP > Cloud > Update Time also uses the cloud afaik.

In terminal you can set the update interval.
 /ip cloud> p;rint
          ddns-enabled: no
  ddns-update-interval: none
           update-time: no
Maybe Mikrotik could make a disable "call-home" in QuickSet to disable all earlier mentioned calls, in one go.

Interfaces > Detect Internet => cloud.mikrotik.com
Tested all that, no change.

The Mikrotik relays all DNS requests to the PiHole which I have defined in /IP DNS Server.
PiHole logs ("pihole -tail") 21:27:14: query[A] www.mikrotik.com from 192.XXX.XXX.253 which is the Routerboard.
Enabling Remote Requests does not make a difference...

Perhaps "the Dude" is doing that?

Thanks a lot for your help,
Christian

Re: Polling of mikrotik.com  [SOLVED]

I made a test and deactivated "the Dude" which stopped the polling.
But I have no idea who does that - seems to be some kind of probe/function since the interval matches the polling frequency...

EDIT: the DNS-Probe is responsible for that...

Cheers,
Christian
