marking packets to an external gateway

Mon Apr 05, 2021 2:36 am

hello all,

i have a mikrotik router, with one gateway (goes to a linux box) and 3-4 connected networks behind it.
i do not have access to the linux box, although it has 3-4 interfaces connected to the internet.
All packets going to the linux gateway are masqueraded.

So, whats the easiest way to mark somehow the masqueraded packets, so the Linux admin could route me properly?
i have setup the address lists, with the 3-4 groups i want to mark and route from a different gateway.

You can use
  • src-nat instead of masquerade and ask the linux box admin to choose the routing table depending on the source address of the packet coming from you,
  • DSCP values,
  • VLAN ID in VLAN tags,
  • priority in VLAN tags
There are no other fields in the frame or packet headers you could modify without affecting the contents of the packet.

For me the easiest would be for linux admin to assign vlan tags to your traffic,

Then all you have to do is assign the vlan to the ethernet interface and the connection is made.......
