dhcpv4-client - critical bug cause unexpected sector writes rising

Sun Jun 06, 2021 11:02 am

Who is affected - all current ROS (6.48.x, 6.47.x, 6.46.x) who are the target for LTE Passthrough

Setup
  • LHG LTE Kit - "who provides LTE Passthrough"
  • wAP ac LTE6 kit - "where the LTE Passthrough is provided"
Im connect by wire LHG LTE Kit with wAP ac LTE6 kit,
setup LTE Passthrough from LHG LTE Kit to wAP ac LTE6 kit

And after enabling DHCP client (on wAP ac LTE6 kit) on interface where Passthrough is provided
face huge unexpected sector writes on internal disk:
  • Each 30 seconds - 6 sector writes
  • Each 1 min - 12 sector writes
and this count are continue increasing in future...
(at third day i'm got 75k writes per only 8hr)

When im put such setup in production im got:
  • 26k writes on first day (24hr)
  • 91k writes after second days (48hr)

And sector writes are continue to rise exponentially...

If i disable DHCP Client - all write activities are immediately stops

Of cause im not so happy to know that NOR flash module in my device are died in next couple months
and im open service request in mikrotik support (SUP-50472)

But when support person start handling my case they start talking very strange things:
(that are not rellevant to this situations - i.e. absolutly nonsens things)
Like: "We also do not believe the DHCP client is needed for LTE connection, this could be a misconfiguration"

What??? Seems this support person are not familiar with technology that Mikrotik offers,
don't understand this situation and even nor know wiki...

From wiki https://wiki.mikrotik.com/wiki/Manual:I ... gh_Example
...On the host on the network where the Passthrough is providing the IP a DHCP-Client should be enabled...

My support case are stuck (on this "skilled one") and not going to real engineering team.
Very sad story :(
