Hardware recommendation for routing up to 2Gb/s

Wed Jun 16, 2021 5:24 pm

Hello,

I'm looking for a Mikrotik device with:
- equipped two 2.5 Gb/s Ethernet (either native or through a SFP+ slot)
- able to route a 1 or 2 Gb/s flow applying NAT or firewall rules.

I've looked at several product but:
- RB4011 is fine but only host a single SFP+ slot,
- hEX PoE has no SFP+ slot at all,
- CRS305 seems under-powered for routing (is L3 hardware offloading changing this ?)
- CCR1009 also host a single a single SFP+ slot,

1. How many packets per second should a box be able to process to keep up with a 1 or 2 Gb/s link, usage being "simple Internet access" (web surfing, watching videos, ...) ?
2. Which existing box could match ?

Best regards
3. Are you aware a soon-to-be-released Mikrotik

You could combine a CRS305 and a RB4011 and get great routing with multiple SFP+ ports, and that's the next cheapest option after getting a CCR1036 with only 2 SFP+ ports.

The CRS305 will not do NAT in L3 HW offload, just standard routing. The CRS309 will, if you want to go the L3 HW offload route.

...my best bet, but without own experience, is the CCR2004.

What are you too friggen lazy to look up the routers yourself.
It took me 30 seconds to find a 1036 model that has two SFP+ ports......

or the CCR2004

Take your pick...........

My ideal pick would be a 2 (or 4 ports) 2.5Gb ports with RB4011 processing power.
You can build one using SBCs like Hardkernel's H2+ but that is a very path ...

Thanks for all input

The CCR1036 is going to be the most stable option. As much as I love the idea of the CCR2004, it's still going through some growing pains.
