Public IP to users in my hotspot

Tue Nov 27, 2007 3:37 pm

I want to assign Public IPs to some of my hotspot users, so my whole network stays transparent for them. I mean, the user will have a Public IP that won't be natted, and that can be reached from anywhere in the world.
I was told I should create an IP pool with the rank of public IPs I wanted my HotSpot to assign. But I can't make it work... Does anybody know how?

Say my RouterOS has public interface with IP x.y.z.1 and I want to assign to clients on HotSpot interface IPs x.y.z.2 to .15
I already have many clients with private IPs 192.168.0.2 to 254 masqueraded after IP x.y.z.1, and they have to keep working.

Any comment would help!

Another way to try would be "Universal Client Interface" (as it was called in version 2.8 ).
The client assigns the public IP statically to his interface.
HotSpot Fully NATs that IP to one in the subnet it uses (private IP)
By marking traffic, one could full nat again to use the public IP

But I think this is a bit more complicated, and not as direct as the other solution.
Anyway, if it works...

Please help me find the best way, and try to explain as detailed as you can (yes, I'm quite "hard" to undestand! :( )

If NAT is not acceptable to you,
you may ask for another public subnet to the router (that you can set these public addresses directly to client PC).
You are not able to assign HotSpot interface IPs x.y.z.2 to .15.

Sergejs, thanks for your post!

OK, I have two public addresses available: x.y.z.1 to 15 and x.y.z.129 to 134
I assign x.y.z.1 to my router's public interface
I assign x.y.z.133 to my client's interface (which is behind the HotSpot)

How do I get that IP through my router to the Internet without natting it?

Make sure these addresses are not from the same subnet.
Modify you existing 'NAT' rule and specify 'src-address', that is equal to local network.

OK, I have two different subnets of public IPs, we're OK with that.
I should still create a pool fo the second subnet, so HotSpot can work with those IP without natting them. Right?
And I'll modify the sourcenatting (masquerading) so it doesn't affect traffic from public IPs, just the ones from my private subnetwork, as you say.

Unfortunately, I'm not so sure on how to do this. I'll study more, and try a lot!

Thanks for your help, Sergejs!

If you can use pppoe you will be more happy. I have this setup in several locations, the pppoe server is on the private intrerface but the pool is public addresses. Both hotspot and pppoe work great.
