What do you recommend for back up electricity?

Sat Jan 12, 2008 8:05 pm

What do you recommend for back up electricity to supply Mikrotik rb532 together with rb112. How long approximately does it run without electricity using rb532?

Thanks.

Could use almost anything. Depends on what you have available. i.e. Just have normal power, a normal UPS will work great. a 650 watt unit will hold 3 RB532s with radios up for many hours.

If you only have solar or something else like that, then you will have to determine what options based on what the power system is. But other than that, normal UPS's are the way to go.

We have very erratic power in some of our areas - so we have made up the following as backup power:-

Industrial Battery Charger - 10 Amp
109A/H Deep Cycle Battery (Maintenance Free - aka Solar Battery)
Weather-Proof Box

We run 12V DC (which is very clean power) up to the units and some of the BSS have up to 4 RB532's attached.

ROM - we get about 27 hours autonomy out of a system like this... trick is NOT to let the Solar Battery run FLAT - because they take forever to take a charge again. Using normal vehicle batteries is also OK but requires more Maintenance Visits to the sites to check on the battery where the Solar Battery doesn't need this..... Some of our systems have operated for more than 2 years like this without a hassle.

Hope this helps.

A low budget solution for 2 RB532 has been:

A 1200VA PowerTREE UPS as charger
The RBs are connected directly to the batteries.

Result: at least 32Hours of life without AC.
