RouterBoard 1000 PPPoE

Sun Feb 03, 2008 7:01 am

Any one test RB1000 with PPPoE server load

Can RB1000 handle 3000 PPPoE connection with dynamic bandwidth control only (No change MSS, compression or encryption)?

Is there a rack mount case available for it? How does it stack up to like a 2.4Ghz P4?

You can look at PPPoE documentation to get the information about the theoretical resource consumption for each PPPoE client,
http://www.mikrotik.com/testdocs/ros/2. ... /pppoe.php

3000 clients at one broadcast domain does not sound like good configuration.
I think you have to consider better local network design and segregate 3000 users to smaller groups.

Who said that all 3000 users should be on the same subnet? How about VLANs?
I'm also interested in RB1000 performance with a large number of PPPoE clients with shaping/filtering.

well, PPPoE theoretical resource usage is shown at the link.
Anyway additionally RADIUS server will be required for PPP database, since local PPP secret database is designed for 50-70 clients.

http://forum.mikrotik.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=21123 may give you some answers to the capabilities of an x86 system

Have not tested the 1000 yet, but a single core 3gig system can handle 2700 PPPoE sessions+.. Multi-core will change that as well. See just under a 50% gain when dual-cores are used.
