Web Proxy Counters Total Disk Size and Free Disk Space 0

Thu Jul 31, 2008 8:45 am

We are using a transparent proxy.

Under IP / Web Proxy / Web Proxy Settings / Status the following counters are 0:

RAM Cache Used 0 KiB
Total Disk Size 0 KiB
Free Disk Space 0 KiB

Our Cache Drive is System (we only have one drive).
The Max Cache Size is unlimited
and "Cache on Disk" is ticked.

What am I missing?

Are you there is a traffic, which is hitting proxy ?
What do you have for DST-NAT rule and 'ip proxy' configuration ?

All other counter are going up (probably coming from RAM hits?):

Requests: 942215
Hits: 59691

Cache Used: 90 019 KiB
RAM Cache Used: 0 KiB
Total RAM Used: 19 613 KiB

Received From Servers: 12 598 996 Kib
Sent to Client: 12 693 326 KiB
Hits Sent To Clients: 358 973 KiB

Total Disk Size: 0 KiB
Free Disk Space: 0 KiB

It's a 750 GB hard drive.

The DST-NAT rule is:
0 ;;; Redirect port 80 to transparent proxy running on port 3128
chain=dstnat action=redirect to-ports=3128 src-address=172.17.0.0/16 dst-port=80 protocol=tcp

I suppose some of my other questions are:

* Can you cache on the system drive or are you supposed to install a separate drive for the cache?

* Is it actually better to install a separate drive for the cache?

The documentation doesn't have much information about separate drives.

post here ip proxy print.

Do you use external HDD, or proxy is on the same HDD with RouterOS ?
1) It's possible to cache on system driver [except RB100,RB500], and it's possible to cache on external driver.

I use one 750GB hard drive, the system and the proxy are on the same drive.

Here is /ip proxy print output:

[admin@Public IP Controller] > /ip proxy print
enabled: yes
src-address: 192.168.50.254
port: 3128
parent-proxy: 0.0.0.0
parent-proxy-port: 0
cache-drive: system
cache-administrator: "technical@xxxxxxxx.com"
max-cache-size: 102400KiB
cache-on-disk: yes
max-client-connections: 600
max-server-connections: 600
max-fresh-time: 3d
serialize-connections: no
always-from-cache: no
cache-hit-dscp: 4

Is there someone I can pay to have a look at this? I am really quite desperate to have it sorted out.

Eugene, are you sure there really is a problem? Seems as though your proxy is working.

Comparing your settings to my proxies, it looks like you're using the old proxy so I'm guessing 2.9.xx?

Well what I'm trying to say is that my proxy ALSO says that;

Total Disk Size 0 KiB
Free Disk Size 0 KiB

But it still works.

Your 'Cache Used: 90 019 KiB' is very near the threshold of 'max-cache-size: 102400KiB' so it will soon start purging older files.

Perhaps I've missed what the problem is.

Hi Hilton,

Thank you for your response. I see what you mean - perhaps there is no problem.

First of all, I mistook Max. Cache Size for Max. Object Size which I think existed before.

I am using version 3.11 so I am very curious to find out how your settings differs from mine?

I have now changed the Max. Cache Size to unlimited and I'll wait to see if the cache grows beyond 2 GB since I have two Gigabytes of RAM in the machine.

I still find it a bit odd that RAM Cache Used, Total Disk Size, and Free Disk Space is all at 0 KiB. That doesn't sounds correct but anyway if it's working I won't worry about it. Will keep you posted.

Eugene, you have this option set;

cache-on-disk: yes

This means the proxy will use hard drive space for your cache.
