Looking for a x86 motherboard

Sun Aug 17, 2008 12:33 pm

Hi all

I've been looking for a x86 motherboard for core router use...
Looking in the wiki i found "Gigabyte GA-8I848P-G" i did all the things i needed:
4-5 PCI
Intel CPU (about 3GHz)
2x Serial ports
and works with RouterOS v3.x

But the problem with this board is that i can't buy it anywhere...

So do any of you know a board that i can use, that is not on the list, and that meets my demands? :)

Why not just use a "Tested and Supported" x86 system?

Well there is a alot of excuses :)
- the price...
- and the need to fix it asap when there is a problem, and wait days for spare parts.
- my own setup the way i want it.

it's cheaper for me to have a new motherboard in stock than to buy another "tested and supported system" for backup...

I don't want to waste money on a MB that runs ROS like p00...
So if people wanted to share there experience with motherboards that wasn't on the Wiki, i would be happy :)

I'm in the same situation you are and am looking for this one:

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Mot ... uctID=2464

Good capacitors, LGA775, dual channel, ICH8 (ICH9 apparently have some issues), good board layout, onboard video.

As second and third options I am looking for these:

http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Mot ... -946GM-DS2
http://www.gigabyte.com.tw/Products/Mot ... uctID=2408

Both are ICH7, tested and stable, very similar to the first.

Good Luck!

***edit***

Instead of looking for boards with several PCIs, try to buy the 4-in-1 Gigabit NIC produced by MikroTik, IN/G44V.

 OMG! But If I were you I wouldn't rely on finding a board with so many PCIs for much long. If you find a supplier try to buy as many as you can for backup because it seems PCI isn't going to stay for much longer. I just hope MikroTik starts to sell PCI-Express NICs soon.

Agreed.

We have been using Intel MBs, CPUs and PRO1000 NICs for a couple/few years now. Very reliable, configurable, relatively inexpensive and parts (if ever needed) are always available. In addition to only using Intel for major components we build our 4U MikroTik routers with redundant hot-swap power supplies to insure additional protection, flexibility and overall greater uptime.

When comparing price, flexibility, performance and reliability it's hard to beat a properly built MikroTik router.

Best,

Brad

For that many interfaces I'd get a good switch and use Vlans.
