Intel Atom board D945GCLF fot MT

Tue Sep 02, 2008 10:47 am

I would like to run MT on Intel D945GCLF board with Atom processor, but there is problem with cards. MT 3.13 does not recognize onboard NIC and any PCI card inserted to PCI slot. Why? Is it posiible (or will be at next release?) to support this board?

this is new technolgy, there are probably no linux driver yet. you have to wait until the drivers are in the default linux kernel, and when RouterOS will use that kernel.

Does MT changes kernel at next subversion releases or kernel is changing only with "big" version changes (for instance from 2.9x to 3.x)?

it is changed more often than major releases, but not with every uptate. probably 2-3 times in a major version

Maybe just add this driver to MT: http://tinyurl.com/6yfrcy

we never add any random drivers to MT to improve stability. we only use trusted drivers in the kernel

Would be cool to see some routing results on Atom based HW... If they only added a second PCI slot it to the available motherboards it would be really cool to test MT on it...

I got to play with one of these sort of boards today and it looked just like the one mentioned. The only thing different was that it was a dual core atom processor according to /proc/cpuinfo. My friend had installed and was running opensuse 11.0 on it with zero problems. They are less than $100 for a motherboard, processor, fan/heatsink with integrated video, realtek ethernet, etc... It has a 20 pin power supply connector so I can reuse all those old power supplies that were suddenly outdated with the advent of everyone moving to 24 pin power.

If they worked with MT, adding a MT IDE DOM, $25 worth of DDR2 memory and a gigabit card or a PCI-MiniPCI adaptor card for radios would make a smokin MT system.

It's not that... Intel is usually the bearer of boringness and compatibility for corporate desktops. This new board/chip is cheap and innovative (for it's purposes) and competes with VIA. I think it's actually a desktop board being repurposed for our uses which is typically the realm of embedded boards.

So... does Intel D945GCLF compatible in new ROS v3.15 ? I would like to use this mainboard for my new 70 km link with "micro" latency. Please let me know if it is already supported.

Thanks

Does anyone have problems with the Atom boards locking up when you try to reboot them via routerOS?

I do. :(

Try with 4.0 to see if it works OK there :) Report back if problem persists. Thanks.

the same with my boards;
if you hit Restart from winbox/terminal or any kind of soft restart, the boards will not restart and the services will stop (including ethernet). In 3.22 is the same. Didnt tried with 3.30.

I just build 7 routers with the Intel D945GCLF2, 4 port PCI RB44GV NIC, and a small 1U case. We have installed a couple so far and they are working great! Using RouterOS v3.30 and v4, no reboot problems.

Too bad MikroTik doesn't see a market for a lower cost rackmount router; when I brought it up at the MUM they thought it was a joke and everyone had a good laugh.

RB1100 is low cost rackmount router. Do you like it?

We use D945GCLF2D with MT and they are simply amazing, none issues at all. Awesome CPU power with gigabit ethernet, but we use the latest ROS version.

Yes, it is pretty good! Pretty much the same cost as our router. It has more ports and better VPN performance, ours has USB ports and ability for internal wireless card.

Is the microSD card externally accessible? Is it used for firmware/config? We have an external CompactFlash and it is a great convenience.

RB1100 pricing and capabilities are quite good and bypass feature is a nice bonus. One thing amiss is lack of USB port(s) on RB1100.

Anybody knows how many fans are on RB1100 and how noisy it is?

Dual fan with failover support mounted at case back
Did you find a picture of the rear of the unit?

In another thread Normis says that CPU has no fan but RB1100's "cooling system" has fans.

It would be nice if larger fans were used (angled) but I doubt it.

it does have fans, and they're not quiet either... you'll probably want this in a server room. It's noisier than my 2 cisco switches and a supermicro 3U server in my office...

the RB1100 has case-mounted fans and a plastic tunnel over the CPU, but the CPU itself only has a heatsink.
