Error talking to server : sending back up email

My SMTP server creates a connection and recognizes where I want to send the e-mail. However it does not send my server says "failed to receive e-mail" while the log in the router says "Error sending e-mail: error talking to server". has anyone else encountered this problem or can anyone help?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi there,

We have one Mikrotik that is refusing to send emails since April 8th, yet the rest of them using the same settings are sending their nightly emails as expected..

Tempted to update ROS. What version are you using? The one in question at the moment is v3.22.

I'm getting the same error

enable 'system email' logging and see detailed log of error

It appears to be a RouterOS issue.. unless I'm hugely mistaken. Something appears to be missing from the OS.

I've just upgraded this RB600 (the one in question) to v3.23 and still no joy.

The difference I see immediately is the "Mail From" send is missing in the failing router. Are you certain all is correct in
/tool e-mail
Insure the "from:" value is correct.

Yep the from is correct..

Is the destination email address account on the email server you set in "/tool e-mail"? Or is it going to be a relay?

It's going to a relay, but, like the other Mikrotik, it's setup in exactly the same way as about 10 others which are operating as expected, there's little reason for this one to not operate correctly.

It only seems to be this one :(

All the other Mikrotiks have been sending their emails as scheduled, apart from this one, of various different architectures and RoS versions.

Is this errant box the same IP as the others? I have my own email server, and she is a bit grumpy about relays. If I don't tell her to relay for a specific IP, she will refuse to talk to you. I hope yours is set the same.

Both Mikrotiks are sending their traffic out through the one gateway, so effectively yea, our External/Public IP is dealing with the traffic from the working and not working Mikrotik(s).

Alarm bells are ringing about the file system error:

recv: 454 TLS missing certificate: error: 02001002:system library:fopen:No such file or directory (#4.3.0)

Is there any way of replacing or regenerating that?

Alarm bells here also. If you have access to your email server logs, take a look and see what the email server is telling you about the transaction.

Unfortunately no access to that relay, it's our ISP's relay.

OK. No need to bother your ISP yet. How are you scheduling the backup send? Is it a script?

Yep, it's scheduled, as a script.. manually or automatically it bears no fruit.

How about a test of the email delivery service then! :D
/tool e-mail
send to="youremail@yourdomain.com" subject="test" body="test"
Does it go?

Same problem I'm afraid.. it's down to the RoS.. not the config :(

It didn't go

...then I would recommend sending a supout.rif to MikroTik support with a short explanation of the problem, if your are certain there is no problems with the /tool e-mail settings, or any firewall or NAT rules that would affect the transaction. To create the supout.rif file:
/system sup-output
The file will be created in "/file" and you can FTP it off the router to email if you can't do it from the router.

Cheers.. I grabbed that off the Router there, I'll send it off to them.. where'll I find the appropriate address to send it to? Is there a specific format of email or is the file enough on it's own?

Just include the file as an attachment and send it to support (at) mikrotik.com
Replace the (at) with @, of course. Just keeps the simple email gleaners from picking up the email address from this forum.

I'm with ya on that ;) I started doing that years ago when spam filters weren't so great.. still not a bad practice (but thank god for gmail!)

hmmm... it's strange... why ROS tries to start TLS connection in second case?.. didn't find any TLS settings in /tool e-mail

Yea, either the logging isn't 100% thorough to show each and every step, or there's a huge issue with regard to that ROS..

Note that on the 4th line of each log there, they both receive STARTTLS command from the SMTP server to declare it's available but the ROS that's throwing the wobbler is trying to initiate a secure connection even though it's not even setup to do so (as you say, there are no TLS settings on ROS to change, that I'm aware of).

Hi again,

We're still facing this same problem down the road - now with an RB433. To confirm that emails are going out, we have an RB333 which is actually connected to this RB433, no firewall restrictions in any shape or form to interfere with the transmission of the SMTP commands.. the RB433 is having problems (as are our RB600s, still) while the RB333 happily transmits away.

This is definitely a problem regarding some newer builds, somehow related to the newer hardware. Just so there's no confusion also.. the RB433 and RB333 are both running v3.30.

Any ideas, or even more urgently.... solutions? We need this fixed. I'm hoping Mikrotik can acknowledge this problem and try to resolve it.
